**ENGRAVINGS OF WRAITH by Kiera Dellacroix - [Alt]
Joining the ranks of such epic romantic spy thrillers as Sharon Bower's LUCIFER RISING and SURFACING by Paul Seely and Jennifer Garza, comes one of the finest uber tales to hit the Net this year by a new writer who with this incredible novel explodes on the fiction scene with the force of a locomotive! In an absolutely RIVETING, lengthy read you will NOT be able to put down, Kiera brings us the harrowing story of a woman determined to crawl out of hell. To the world at large she is Bailey Cameron - the mysterious, wealthy owner of an Atlanta corporation. In more sinister circles around the globe, however, amidst people whose business it is to kill, she is known by a single name - The Wraith. It is a name that strikes terror in the hearts of the coldest assassins, the deadliest criminals and the most ruthless government powers on the planet for they know that where the Wraith appears, death follows - quickly if one is lucky - agonizingly slow if not. Fifteen years ago, in a fit of rage, a 16 year-old murdered the British officer responsible for the deaths of her father and brother. Declared dead herself by the authorities, the teenager would instead embark on the darkest period in her life, indoctrinated into a shadowy organization that would in fact "kill" the young girl she once was producing a killer with supernatural abilities - a killer, years later that organization, would find itself hard-press to control. Having severed her ties with her former employers three years before, Bailey had hoped to regain some semblance of a normal life but that hope is quickly dashed when she realizes that those employers have no intention of simply letting go of the Wraith. A personal relationship is not something she had wanted now - not something she had actively looked for - not something she had ever even dreamed about...but it's exactly what she finds herself in when she meets Piper Tate. The beautiful little red-head assistant charms her way into Bailey's life with a precision to rival Bailey's own in other, deadlier areas. Immediately attracted to her beautiful boss, Piper also finds herself intrigued by the enigma that is the woman. Stronger than just about anyone Piper has ever met...yet amazingly fragile in other ways - brilliant with an air of cool sophistication...yet at the same time painfully shy with an innocence about affairs of the heart no one would suspect. An unlikely duo - the two discover in one another a connection unlike anything they've ever known - a passion that leaves them breathless and a love that soon becomes their very reason for living. In the weeks ahead, the possibility of loosing that will terrify Bailey as she prepares for the inevitable - the final fight with the forces that decimated her life and are intent on doing so again. More than anything in the world, she wants a normal life, wants to regain the family she once had, and wants the promise of a future with the woman who's now given her more of a reason for living than ever before but to do that she knows the Wraith will need to surface one last time in a final battle that will either win her the happiness she craves...or bring her the oblivion she was denied for so many years. To say that this novel is an EXCELLENT read is to put it mildly. It's more like an experience that will have you feeling the gamut of emotions right along with these wonderful characters. In Bailey Cameron Kiera has created a modern uber that is a poignant study in contradictions. A woman with an outer shell of steel and a soul in pieces. One of the deadliest creatures on the planet...and one of the most innocent as well. Piper Tate is the perfect antithesis - a friendly, sweet, gentle soul who nevertheless lays siege to the walls around Bailey's heart with the determination of a battering ram...but a much more patient and effective approach. Kiera surrounds these two with a terrific supporting cast including three very loyal and surprisingly insightful allies of Bailey's and a number of Piper's delightfully down-to-earth and supportive family members. Even the villains in this come across as very human - at times even amusing. Fine writing, great dialogue, incredible characters and a stunningly gripping story all combine to make this mammoth novel into one of the best you'll likely come across on the Net or anywhere else for that matter. If you're one of those who hasn't read an uber before - give this one a try - and prepare to get HEAVILY addicted. An OUTSTANDING work, this gets my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION! - 437 pgs., 7/12/01

**FRACTURED TAPESTRY by Kiera Dellacroix - [Alt]
Featuring what has to be one of the most irreverent leads I've ever come across in a story, Kiera's latest offering is probably going to insult the sensibilities of most readers - certainly many in XWP fandom. Through most of it I found myself thinking that her lead would probably hate my guts. I would certainly have a lot of issues with her...and still I found myself amused by Maddie Ledoux and intrigued by her quest for justice in this skillfully crafted murder mystery. Having grown up in a neighborhood in which both the mob and law enforcement recruited heavily, Maddie has strong ties to both sides. They are ties which have saved her but on more than one occasion and which surface once again to help her now that she needs them the most. The man Maddie has loved as a father most of her life has been murdered - his guts ripped open my a bullet designed to inflict the most pain possible. Determined to find his killer and extract her own measure of justice, the former cop turned private eye begins investigating an unusual group of individuals her father had dinner with right before his death. In the days ahead, Maddie will have to try to piece together the many different parts of an increasingly complicated puzzle as a killer strikes over and over again and clues seem to lead toward a vicious vendetta between crime families and the shadowy figure which inherited control of one of these. In an ironic twist, despite the tragedy in her life, the gorgeous but arrogant and woefully unsophisticated detective, finds herself also dealing with a revived personal life as one of the subjects of her investigation makes it clear she wants to do a little personal investigating herself while some serious competition emerges in the form of a beautiful video store owner who seems to know Maddie better than she knows herself. Reminiscent of the classic detective stories of Dashiell Hammett and with elements of popular mob tales like THE GODFATHER and GOODFELLAS, Kiera's latest is an entertaining yarn about characters that are FAR from perfect, sometimes aren't even likeable but are very human. They are characters that have lived their lives in a tough world and have been molded by the harsh realities of their experiences. Combining a challenging mystery, a no holds bar hero and an amusing love story, this entertaining reads come VERY HIGHLY if cautiously RECOMMENDED! ;-) - 209 pgs., 5/2002

**ICEHOLE by Kiera Dellacroix - [Alt]
Proving beyond the shadow of a doubt that she is FAR from a one-hit wonder, the brilliant talent behind ENGRAVINGS OF WRAITH returns with another unforgettable tale - a rivetting novel perfect for this spookiest of seasons. In the grand tradition of such horror sci-fi classics as THE THING and ALIENS, the story unfolds in one of the most remote outposts on Earth as Lt. Commander Malory Quinn Lovecraft is sent to take command of a top secret base in Antarctica. Months before, scientists working at the base detected "something" under the ice and the team there has been digging to try to get at it ever since. Harboring a strong dislike of military types, Dr. Corky Rivers, one of the civilians working on the project, expects not to like the new commander. In fact, she soon finds herself alternating between wanting to kill the frustrating woman...and wanting to jump her bones for an altogether different purpose ;-) An unorthodox relationship to say the LEAST, the back-and-forth between them soon follows its natural course as a very determined, sometimes unbelievably crass, but more often than not utterly charming Malory Lovecraft wins over not only the entire personnel at the base, but the elusive heart of one little spit-fire of a doctor. It's a romance that proceeds amidst the extreme challenges of living and working in one of the most isolated and hostile places on the planet - a challenge that becomes even more severe when the hole in the ice finally begins to yield some answers...and with those a horror unlike anything humanity has ever known. Trapped at the base by the fierce Antarctic Winter, the soldiers and civilian scientist must ban together to try to survive against a seemingly unstoppable enemy - their best hope of doing so lying in the indomitable will of a commander who now finds herself with a lot more to live for than she's ever had before. To say that Kiera has a knack for creating some of the most dynamic, unforgettable characters around is an understatement to say the least. Her leads have that uberish quality a Xenite will recognize, but they're also incredibly vibrant, original creations in their own right. Malory Lovecraft has to be one of the most unique characters I've ever come across in fiction - a compelling mixture of toughness and vulnerability, innocence and raw sexuality, a startlingly beautiful woman with a decidedly mischievous, at times even crude streak - a commander capable of inspiring the utmost loyalty and respect - a lover with no compunctions about sharing her very soul. This is one character you're gonna fall in love with right along with Corky Rivers. That ornery little doctor, meanwhile, is an amusing delight in her own right as she initially struggles against the inevitable only to later become the fiercest protector Malory Lovecraft has ever had. When these two come together sparks fly in just about EVERY sense of the word ;-) Beyond this charming romance, Kiera has also delivered here a TRULY horrific story with descriptions so vivid you can picture this as a film up on the big screen. Skillfully paced with plenty of those edge-of-your-seat moments to complement the more emotional and playful ones, the novel also features a terrific supporting cast all interwoven into a fictional experience the reader won't soon forget. PERFECT fodder for a series (HINT, HINT Ms. Dellacroix), this hopefully won't be the last time we visit with Malory, Corky and friends. One of the best of the year and the season, it gets my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION! - 163 pgs., 10/31/01
