UNCHARTERED WATERS by K.R. Brendan - [Alt]
This is a promising new uber tale set on the high seas during the reign of the pirates. On her way to the colonies to marry a man she's never met, Catherine Moore is in the wrong place at the wrong time when the ship she's traveling in is boarded by pirates. Confronted by one of the raiders and viciously attacked, the girl's fate seems certain until a beautiful stranger with cold blue eyes delivers her from that fate. Feeling responsible for the traumatized young woman, Tayce disguises her as a boy to safely bring her on board her pirate ship, never suspecting how that selfless act will forever change her life and the future of Catherine Moore. KR is writing here a fun, period piece with likeable characterizations that should keep us coming back for more. [unfinished] - 11 pgs., 9/17/99

**UNDER THE GUN by Lori L. Lake - [Alt]
In a promising sequel to her popular uber GUN SHY, Lori continues the tale of veteran cop Dez Reilly and rookie Jaylynn Savage as they continue to patrol the streets and pursue the personal relationship they began weeks before. Closer now than ever before, the two are still a bit tentative in this new relationship with Dez still not comfortable with the vulnerability sharing her life with another demands and Jaylynn sensing that her partner needs to take things slow. Meanwhile, Dez finds herself once again troubled by nightmares just as the brutal reality of their jobs causes Jaylynn to experience bad dreams of her own. In the weeks ahead the two will face some tough challenges as they have to deal with the consequences of their relationship and with some deadly killings in their district. Although fundamentally different, both Dez and Jaylynn are determined to succeed at the two most important things in their lives - their jobs...and their personal partnership. Lori's writing very effectively paints a picture of two women who care for one another deeply but are still in that uncertain, initial stage of a relationship. The police background adds intensity and angst to an entertaining story well-worth the read. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! - 322 pgs., 7/29/01

**UNMASKED HEARTS by Missy Good - [Alt]
Merwolf treats us to a very special visit with Dar and Kerry in this look back at their first Halloween together. Set just after Kerry began working at EDS, the story has the young newcomer shopping for a costume for the upcoming office Halloween party and feeling a bit angsty about fitting in. For her part, Dar plans on avoiding the festivities as she's always done but those plans start to go awry when her new assistant gently prods her to go awakening within the executive a peculiar urge to scandalize her co-workers...and mingle a bit more with a lovely little revolutionary. One of the best in the fandoms in the use of flashbacks, Missy essentially devotes an entire story to one here giving us a delightful insight into those first stirrings of friendship and more between Dar and Kerry. Amusing and sweet, this is yet another terrific addition to one of the finest series in the fandom. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! - 20 pgs., 10/31/01

VENDETTA by Xenamaster - [Alt]
This is an entertaining uber story that reads like a futuristic version of the first two XWP seasons. It begins with Cameron Hunter arriving at a starbase on the trail of an old enemy from her days as the feared "Headhunter". It's a mission she's distracted from when she saves a young golden-skinned alien girl from the slavers that have captured her. Intent on returning the girl to her people, Cameron soon finds herself with a very loyal friend just as some of the sins of her past come back to hunt her. Xenamaster does a terrific job of incorporating events, characters, and even dialogue from the TV series into this futuristic space opera that would probably work as a fun uber episode. - 43 pgs., 1/28/99

VOICES CARRY by Stacia Seaman
A thoughtful tale with a very serious message, Stacia's latest begins at a junior high school where seventh-grader Jennifer Nelson is dismayed to learn that Stephanie Winslow, the ninth-grader with the locker next to hers, is missing. Wanting very much to help find the older girl who's always been very nice to her, Jennifer decides to pursue the matter on her own when a clue reveals itself. It's a fateful decision that will give rise to a timeless friendship in the worst of situations and teach a hard lesson about a dangerous world. This is not an easy story to digest but it's a well-written one I particularly recommend to younger Xenites. - 12 pgs., 10/31/01
