**END OF THE ROAD by Michelle U - [Alt]
Written in a pseudo-script format, this story begins where the series ender, FRIEND IN NEED started but then follows an entirely different vision tying into previous arcs and revisiting some familiar themes. While camping under the stars Xena and Gabrielle are visited by a bounty hunter who manages to do a little damage before revealing that his target isn't the Warrior Princess but the bard she loves. A powerful warlord has a grudge to settle and Gabrielle seems to be the way he intends to do that. Tired of the fighting - tired of forever endangering her soulmate - Xena attempts to settle the matter on her own but her very determined partner has other ideas. Together the two soon find themselves once again in the middle of an unholy alliance between the gods of old and the new as they move to confront a warlord whose very existence could threaten the age to come. It's a plan that will have Gabrielle coming into her own as the prey risks it all to face the predator and the Warrior Princess engages in one final battle destined to change her life...and the world. A promising new writer, Michelle U has crafted here an intriguing story that works quite well as the culmination of the Xena and Gabrielle story and of the larger tale about an Ancient age coming to past. Her characterizations improve on those in the TV series but are very clearly founded on them. There's some nice subtle humor here and the Xena/Gab relationship is much more satisfyingly defined. A solid alternative to what we got from the official sources, this one should go on that MUST READ list. DO NOT MISS! - 48 pgs., 7/27/01
