This reference is designed to stimulate ideas to develop story characters.

PART ONE -- TYPE OF STORY
- What type of story is the character in? (i.e. Science Fiction, Western, Contemporary, etc.)
- How does this help define the character?

PART TWO -- DESCRIPTIONS
-
Name:
- Does the name portray some aspect of character? (i.e. Blondie Jones, Sergeant Rock, etc.)
- Does the name immediately identify gender or race?
- Is the name dynamic, or commonplace?
- What is the length of the name?
- How difficult is the pronunciation?

Age:
- What is the character's age?
- How does their age affect the character? (i.e. spoiled, patient, impatient, experienced, inexperienced, overconfident, sage-like, streetwise, world-weary, distinguished, etc.)

Height:
- What is the character's height?
- What is the character's perspective according to their height? (i.e. timid, overbearing, defensive, average, etc.)

Weight:
- How much does the character weigh?
- How does their weight affect their character? (i.e. proud, defensive, indifferent, etc.)

Hair:
- What are the character's hair traits? (i.e. color, length, style abundance, bald, thinning, damaged, dyed, bleached, coarse, fine, gray, etc.)
- How do the character's hair traits affect the character?

Eyes:
- What are the specifics about the character's eyes? (i.e. eye color or variations, glasses, contacts, implants, etc.)
- Is the character's vision impaired? Why and how? (see handicap section)
- How does any of the character's eye traits affect the character?

Facial Features:
- What does the character look like? (i.e. unearthly, beautiful, average, homely, ugly, etc.)
- Describe the character's facial features.
- How does this affect their character?

Sex:
- Is the character male or female, or a combination? (alien?)
- How does this affect the character?

Build:
- What type of build does the character have? (i.e. average, superhuman, athletic, below average, etc.)
- Does the character have usual or unusual (alien) body features?
- Include a description of the character's body features.
- How does this affect their character?

Handicaps (if any):
- Does the character have any handicaps in the following areas: physical, mental, spiritual?
- Include details such as how and why.
- Describe things used to correct the problem. (i.e. medicine, prosthetics, counseling, etc.)
- How does this affect their character?

Speech:
- What does the character's voice sound like?
- What language does the character speak?
- Do they know any languages in addition to their native tongue?
- What verbal traits does the character have? (i.e. accent, slang, wordiness, precision, repetition, etc.)
- Is the character speech handicapped?
- How do any of their speech traits affect the character?

I.Q.:
- What is the character's IQ?
- How does this affect the character?

Mental:
- Is the character mentally sound, or unbalanced, or unbalanced occasionally under extreme conditions?
- How does this affect the character?

Emotions:
- What are the major emotions experienced by the character?
- How does this affect the character?

Race:
- What is the character's race?
- Is the character an alien (not from this planet)?
- How does this affect the character?

Alien physical traits:
- Describe any alien physical traits if the character is an alien:

PART THREE -- CHARACTER TRAITS

Habits:
- What habits does the character have?
- How does this affect the character?

Tastes:
- What tastes (if any) does the character have? (i.e. food, clothing, music, home, decorations, etc.)
- How does this affect the character?

Hobbies:
- Does the character have any hobbies?
- How does this affect the character?

Responsibilities:
- Does the character have any responsibilities? (i.e. family, job, military, etc.)
- How does this affect the character?

Education:
- Does the character have an education? How much? Include details about the character's education:
- How does this affect the character?

Skills:
- Does the character have any skills? If yes, include details.
- How does this affect the character?

Occupation:
- What is the character's occupation?
- How does this affect the character?

Income:
- What is the character's income?
- How does this affect the character?

Environment:
- Where does the character live?
- How does this affect the character?

Possessions:
- What kinds of possessions does the character have?
- How does this affect the character?

Spirituality:
- What does the character believe?
- How does this affect the character?

Eccentric/Non-Eccentric:
- Yes, or no? If so, what and why?

Morality/Immorality:
- Yes, no, or combination?
- How does this affect the character?

Reactions:
- Are there any special circumstances where the character has abnormal reactions?

Powers (if any):
- Does the character have any unusual capacities? (i.e. magic, telepathy, extra strong, etc.)

PART FOUR -- PERSONALITY TRAITS
- What personality traits does the character have? (i.e. courageous, caring, confident, hateful, loving, responsible, etc.)

PART FIVE -- CHARACTER MOTIVATION
- What motivates the character? Elaborate.

PART SIX -- FAMILY AND FRIENDS
- Does the character have a family? Who are they?
- Are the family members living or deceased (circumstances)?
- How does the character interact with family?
- Does the character have any friends? Who are they?
- How does the character interact with friends?
- Include short bios of family and friends:

PART SEVEN -- CHARACTER HISTORY
- Include a short bio of the character's origin, etc.
