LEGACY by Anon
This talented veteran returns with a sensitively written, nostalgic story that serves as a reminder of the wonderful quality literature has to be different things to different people and to give immortality to those special souls that make a difference. Set in a tavern, the story chronicles a conversation between the famous Blind Bard of Ancient Greece, Homer, and a stranger as Homer recalls the beautiful, gifted young bard he once met at the Academy years before and wonders whether her stories and his own will live on as a lasting legacy to who they were and the lives they touched. This is a very nice little tale featuring an insightful commentary about life and literature along with a thoughtful tribute to a great historical figure and a couple of very memorable fictional ones. DO NOT MISS! - 10 pgs., 12/15/99

LESSON LEARNED (A) by Marie E. Costa
This is a very poignant look at Xena's thoughts throughout the events in the episode SINS OF THE PAST. From the puzzled amusement of her first meeting with Gabrielle, to the heart-wrenching pain of her mother's rejection, to the haunting loneliness she still feels at having lost Lyceus, to the continuing amazement at the tenacity of a certain young bard. Insightful approach which gives a unique perspective into the mind of the Warrior Princess. - 3 pgs., 7/26/97

**LIKE CHAKRAM FOR CHOCOLATE by The Lurkers - Rastro and Maddog
If you thought Rastro and Maddog were funny after reading SYNCHRONIZATION BETWEEN FRIENDS, you're going to think BRILLIANT after reading this second effort. In the words of Caesar, with this new tale the Lurkers *define* themselves as two of the nuttiest...and most hilarious bards in the Xenaverse!! This is actually beyond hilarious! Maintaining the PMS theme of their first story, the Lurkers here have Xena and Gabby meet up with a lost band of Aztecs who as a peace gesture decide to share a mysterious dark powder with the Gabster, showing her how to make a muddy mixture with it that is guaranteed to cure the Warrior Princess' "pissy" behavior. The poor Aztecs never suspect, however, the - er - rather strong effect their concoction will have on the bard who after tasting it is suddenly convinced the mixture is better than sex!...THIS IS A MUST READ!! - 5 pgs., 5/28/97

LITTLE GABRIELLE LEARNS TO READ by Susan A. Rice
Inspired by Lucia's delightful comic strip XENA AND GABRIELLE'S LITTLE ADVENTURES, this adorable tale takes place during Xena and Gabrielle's childhood and assumes the two have been best friends for MUCH longer than we ever thought ;-) The story has Little Gabrielle trying to learn to read so she can be a bard someday, and her best pal Little Xena coming up with a clever plan to help her do just that. Cute does not even begin to describe how precious these characters and their friendship is. Lucia's comic strip along with stories like these from Susan would have made for one MARVELOUS Saturday Morning cartoon for kids...certain to attract quite a number of adults too :) DO NOT MISS! LITTLE RED RIDING CLOAK: A XENAVERSE FAERY TALE by Nene Adams
Nene's third entry in her XENAVERSE FAERY TALES series based on classic fairy tales tackles a much darker theme than the first two offerings in the series as it tells the story of a tortured soul who targets an innocent child and a bard in a haze of rage born of abuse and neglect. A poignant story certain to affect you. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! - 4 pgs., 3/25/98

LITTLE XENA'S CHORES by Susan A. Rice
This second entry in Susan's LITTLE XENA AND LITTLE GABRIELLE SERIES finds the girls sharing the load as it where when Cyrene insists her energetic daughter do all her chores before going out to play and Little Gabrielle offers to help her best friend. Before long those "chores" have become an adventure in themselves as the girls figure out ways around tricky challenges and discover even work can be fun when shared with a friend. LONG NIGHT (THE) by Carmen McDonald

**LONG ROAD FROM CHINA (THE) by Gershwhen
Gershwhen's first attempt at fan fiction is an intriguing, well-written new story that begins immediately after the events in THE DEBT II: BETRAYAL. It has the warrior and bard walking away from the Green Dragon's castle and then beginning the healing process in their relationship as each tries to understand what has happened and how they can recapture the trust and easiness they once had with each other. This offering is not yet finished but it is very promising. [Note: The story contains subtext]. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! - 58 pgs., 11/19/97
https://ausxip.com/bards.html#gershwhen

LONG ROAD BACK (THE) by Eimajj
Set after the events in THE DEBT and Eimajj's own excellent story THE HUNS, this is a long, emotional hurt/comfort piece that begins with Gabrielle on her way back from the Kingdom of Chin with an ill but still very stubborn Warrior Princess who insists on helping a group of village girls captured by slavers. It is a decision that will deliver Xena into the hands of people whose lives she once destroyed and who very much want vengeance. Still struggling with the guilt from her actions in Chin, a desperate Gabrielle must then try to get Xena to overcome the past and fight for her life before it's too late. Eimajj offers a much more in depth treatment of those initial events from the rift than we saw in the TV series. The story is poignant, engrossing and very nicely written. - 61 pgs., 3/4/98

**LONG WAY HOME (THE) by Scout
With stories like JUST AN ORDINARY DAY and THE CYPRESS GROVE Scout has delivered some of the most moving and beautifully written tales in XWP fan fiction. It is a reputation she more than lives up to with this newest effort - a novel which is her longest story to date and arguably her finest. This is a tale about two friendships separated by eons, but forged by the same fierce love, loyalty and trust. It is a story about slavery and courage, cruelty and hope. It is a story that will touch the deepest recesses of your heart and leave you believing in the ability of the human spirit to pass on the best parts of itself to the generations yet to come. This begins as a Mel/Janice story with Mel's niece Carrie going to visit her aunt. The young girl is delighted when the two women decide to take her along on a trip to the Mediterranean where they are going to investigate a new archeological find - a find which could give them more clues about the lives of their legendary ancestors. Most Mel/Janice stories to date have featured Xena and Gabrielle as well but mostly in secondary roles where they are seen briefly through flashbacks or in dreams. In THE LONG WAY HOME, by contrast, they are EVERY bit as important as their descendants with a story of their own which is truly at the heart of this novel. As we read about Mel and Janice uncovering the past - we also SEE that past - one of Xena and Gabrielle's most trying and emotionally draining adventures as they join the crew of Xena's old ship, now run by slavers, intent on making sure they don't continue using it for that purpose. On board they find a young boy who is regularly subjected to the worse of cruelties - a boy who Gabrielle becomes determined to save at any cost. The struggle of these two women to give back freedom and hope to those from whom it has been stripped parallels the dogged determination of an archeologist and her partner millenniums later to uncover that story and reaffirm the legend of a warrior and her bard. Similar also is the impact the friends will have on the young lives they come in contact with - with Xena and Gabrielle giving a child hope in the ancient past and Janice and Mel inspiring the soul of another in the present. Scout uses a different perspective for the present-day and ancient parts of the novel with Carrie telling the story about her trip with Mel and Janice while the tale involving Xena and Gabrielle unfolds on its own. It is an effective technique which gives a distinctive flavor to the two separate plots. This is a poignant, marvelously crafted story guaranteed to put a tear in your eye one moment and a smile on your face the next. A wonderful read which receives my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION! - 11/24/97

LOOSE ENDS by Hobbes
Like many of Hobbes' other stories, this tale reads like a series of vignettes pulled together in a style that very much creates the sense of life on the road. The tale is set after the events in the episode A NECESSARY EVIL and has Xena and Gabrielle returning to the Amazon village before they set off again, this time on a different type of mission - to finally take a vacation. While on this elusive quest, Xena will finally come to terms with the bard's unwavering devotion to her and also find the strength to face some old fears. Nice story firmly based on the powerful friendship between warrior and bard. - 23 pgs., 4/97

LOOSENING THE CHAINS by JS Stephens
