**BATTLE by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Wishes.shtm.htm">Wishes
It is undoubtedly no secret that reading fan fiction is one of the greatest pleasures I derive from the Xena experience online. The depth of talent, the creativity and the generosity of bards continues to amaze and humble me every day. One bard in particular has stood out as a rare talent since her first appearance on the NetForum just about a year ago. Extremely prolific and multi-talented, Wishes has produced a truly extraordinary body of work which includes poetry, skits, parodies, and stories, in both the general and alternative categories, featuring rich, insightful depictions of just about every character from the series. It should come as no surprise then that having decided to explore further the uber-Xena concept she first dealt with in her Mel/Janice stories, Wishes now brings us a tale which raises this increasingly popular type of XWP fan fiction to a new level. BATTLE is a dark piece of fiction - a story which in the author's own words deals with "totalitarianism and the banality of evil". Some of you will be profoundly touched by this story, some will be deeply disturbed by it but I can guarantee NO one will walk away from it unaffected. It is a testament to the skills of this bard, that her writing doesn't just create images - it INVOLVES us - it sparks our imagination daring us to create our own images, daring us to envisage horrors and a sense of hopelessness which imbues this tale with a very personal sense of psychological terror. Caroline is a young technician charged with the care and supervision of prisoners sent to the medical facility she works at. Elizabeth is her latest assignment. In the character of Caroline we can easily see ourselves, a young woman making her way through the days, working to improve her lot in life, working to fit into a system that is all she knows - a system she doesn't want to or doesn't care to question. In Elizabeth we see a prisoner - someone who chose to place herself above the system and who must now pay the consequences. BATTLE is the story of these two women - of two souls connected by a bond which evil will test once more as it did long before. This is a MUST READ for ANYONE who enjoys a well-crafted, brilliantly written work of fiction. BATTLE carries my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!! - 8/26/97

This ninth installment in Verrath's delightful TELL ME SERIES finds a little Warrior Princess on the warpath determined to conquer her battle field...even when it just includes a ball, a couple of goals, and soldiers that aren't quiiiite as imaginative as their fearless leader ;-) Another adorable look into the minds of two of fanfic's most cleverly conceived and endearing ubers. BEAUTIFUL LIE (THE) by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Curiositee.shtm.htm">Curiositee-- [Alt]
Curiositee continues the story begun in THE DANGEROUS TRUTH as Alex Bryson contemplates the recent changes in her life - the new vigor that has her feeling more alive than she has in a long time and the beautiful reporter that has her feeling more loved than ever before. For both women, however, many questions about the past remain unanswered. Alex cannot ignore the curiosity she feels over a woman long believed dead, while Bridget cannot ignore the concern she feels over a possible threat from the ancient past... Curiositee adds new depth to the characterizations in this sequel as she starts to explore the history of these two women. The sense of suspense and mystery is in evidence right from the start. Showing great potential this is one to be checking on regularly. DO NOT MISS! [unfinished] - 21 pgs., 12/14/98

**BLACK BY GASLIGHT by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Nene_Adams.shtm.htm">Nene Adams - [Alt]
[Story previously titled XENA BY GASLIGHT]
This is an Uber-Xena story based in the London of 1888 and featuring the first encounter between Lady Evangeline St. Claire ("Lina"), a tall, wealth beauty who lives by her own rules and the lovely Rhiannon Moore, streetwalker with a gentle heart who has faced much misfortune. Rhiannon's latest bad luck comes when she agrees to service a strange gentleman on a dark night - a fellow who will soon reveal his true deadly intentions but which in so doing, will ironically bring Lady Evangeline and Rhiannon into one another's lives, awakening feelings of familiarity and more within both women. Soon they are working together to try to stop a madman who walks at night - a killer the world will come to know as...Jack the Ripper. Nene brings a sense of realism to this story that is really stunning. She describes Victorian London - the clothing, the people, the nuances of the period with exacting detail. Even her dialogue is written to sound like the vernacular of the time. In "Lina" and Rhiannon she has created two characters that stand on their own while maintaining a strong connection to the warrior and bard from whom they are apparently descendants. This is a very well-written, suspenseful and different XWP story. It is the first entry in Nene's GASLIGHT SERIES. Note: PLEASE make sure to read the author's disclaimer as the story does contain graphic violence. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! [Make sure to also read the sequel THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE] - 110 pgs. 7/30/97

**BLOOD RED SCREAM by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Tragedy88.shtm.htm">Tragedy88 - [Alt]
This terrific contemporary uber story revolves around the life of a very troubled and very lonely computer hacker by the name of Taylor. Having suffered through a nightmarish past, the young woman is still reluctantly tied to the employer who rescued her from the streets - a very wealthy, deadly and heartless employer vent on using Taylor to advance her power. For the hacker life consists of time spent working amidst her computers in an out-of-the-way warehouse, and time spent trying to loose herself in alcohol and sex - until the day she receives an e-mail complementing her on one of her Web stories and suddenly she finds herself... with a friend. Tragedy does a nice job establishing rather original uber characterizations in a suspenseful, poignant storyline. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! [See the sequel - DANCE OF DEATH] - 51 pgs., 12/9/98

BLOODLUST by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Protek.shtm.htm">Protek - [Alt]
A follow-up to Protek's THE LONGING, this newest entry in the INFINITY SERIES has Xena and Rickie investigating a gruesome series of murders showing the telltale signs of a vampire on the loose. Having never met a real vampire in her two thousand years on Earth, the ancient warrior rather doubts that's the answer but the bloodlust evident by the murders do remind her of an all-too-human monster she once met centuries ago called...Prince Vlad. Well-written, Protek's latest does a good job of capturing the feel of this always intriguing series but be warned - if the opening of this story doesn't make you squirm you're a much tougher customer than I am! [unfinished] - 8 pgs., 4/25/99

**BREAKING (THE) by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Redhawk.shtm.htm">Redhawk - [Alt]
A key entry in the popular INFINITY SERIES, this new story marks a turning point in the lives of the immortal Xena and her beloved Rickie as the younger woman graduates from college and the two prepare to go on a celebratory cruise but a cruel twist of fate will destroy those plans as violence once again rips their lives apart plunging the one-time Destroyer of Nations into a darkness she hasn't known in over two thousand years and blinding her to other...possibilities. Redhawk once again gives us a great combination of nerve-wracking suspense, action, and romance in a tale that very effectively merges the feel of both the XWP and HIGHLANDER series. Her Rickie is a delightful, spunky, sexy modern version of the bard that complements Xena just as effectively as her ancient equivalent once did. This one will have you on the edge of that seat. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! - 83 pgs., 2/27/00

**BREAKING CHAINS by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Rooks.shtm.htm">Rooks - [Alt]
Based on the feature film DEAD AGAIN, Rooks' latest is a fabulous modern-day uber mystery which begins with private investigator Faith Dickinson agreeing to try to help a beautiful young amnesiac recover her life. Calling the young woman Gabrielle until they can determine her real name, Faith places an ad in the paper hoping someone will recognize her. They get contacted instead by a well-meaning hypnotist offering to try to help Gabrielle remember who she is. What they uncover instead is an unbelievable connection to a woman who died nearly fifty years before, a story of passionate love, jealousy...and murder. Faith goes from trying to solve one mystery to dealing with two, all the while trying to deal with her growing feelings for Gabrielle and the realization that she herself may be the key to unraveling that mystery from the past. Rooks does a solid job here of integrating the uber characterizations into a suspenseful plot that will keep you guessing 'til the very end. A MUST READ for mystery lovers in particular. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! - 181 pgs., 5/5/99

**BROKEN BLADE (THE): A TALE OF CAMELOT by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Llachlan.shtm.htm">Llachlan - [Alt]
Llachlan contributes a very promising new entry in the INFINITY SERIES as the immortal Xena tells her beloved Rickie about a time of knights and kings and chivalry and intrigue. With the teenager listening spellbound, the ancient warrior remembers the day centuries before when she found the bastard son of a medieval warlord and set out to turn that babe into the king legends had long ago foretold. Llachlan immediately captures here the sense of mystery usually associated with the origins of King Arthur. Moreover, careful attention is also paid to developing the Xena/Rickie relationship, imbuing it with a deep sense of love and tender passion. With a nice flashback to Xena and Rickie's first Solstice together - this is particularly timely story that will immediately grab your attention. One to look forward to in the weeks ahead. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! [unfinished] - 7 pgs., 11/2/98, re-released 2/9/99

BURNING TIME by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Sandakat.shtm.htm">Sandakat - [Alt]
Combining several uber tales into one Sandakat sets her story in modern-day Los Angeles where a chance meeting at a hospital between Doctor Rene Covington and firefighter Dina Pakadios sets in motion a reunion of soulmates that has taken place many times before - in Ancient Greece, then again centuries later on the streets of London and most recently amidst the drama of a world at war. Drawn by a connection neither quite understands but both feel very strongly, the two start to unravel a puzzle centuries old. Sandakat presents a satisfying depiction of the relationship while cleverly linking the different uber incarnations of our heroines. - 81 pgs., 4/22/99
