I think I may have had perhaps an HOUR of sleep last night and Jules Mills is SOLELY responsible. What can I say about this story? This is the type of story EVERY fanfic reader LIVES for. When the Xenaverse becomes a frustrating place and the TV series becomes even more so the continued possibility of gems like this story are what tend to keep me solidly a part of the fandom. This is ALSO a story that will make converts out of all you HEATHENS still uninitiated into the wonderful world of uber fanfic. I dare you to read this and not come out at the end a fan of the uber genre. Jules spins a yarn here that is utterly STUNNING in its emotional impact - in the depth of her characterizations - in the power of this exquisitely crafted story to draw you in and make you a part of this world, making you feel for these characters, making you root for them and cry for them and laugh with them. Set in the not-so-distant future of 2016, the story begins at a bar where ex-con Dana Papadopolis (better known as DOC) and doctor Grace Wilson first meet. Attempting to help after the dark stranger is inadvertently injured in a brawl, Grace finds herself immediately intrigued by the fidgety ex-con who at first refuses but eventually accepts her aid. Thus begins a slow dance between these two souls - one full of gentleness and determination, another hiding in a very dark place after years of barbaric abuse, desolation and disappointments. For Grace it will be an uphill battle all the way as she finds herself having to deal both with a very jealous and very dangerous ex and with a new partner whose physical strength is a stunning contradiction to the fragility lying beneath. Dana meanwhile finds herself trusting someone for the first time in her life, wanting desperately to bring the beautiful doctor and herself some measure of happiness...if only for a little while. Grace and ESPECIALLY Dana are two of the best drawn, most endearing modern uber-archetypes I have ever seen in XWP fanfic - recalling the qualities of Xena and Gabrielle while coming across as very real individuals in their own right. Jules sensitive portrayal of these two women is supplemented by a fantastically original story that integrates some great futuristic elements into a tale that is part hurt/comfort, part murder-mystery, and large part romance. I could go on and on but frankly all I want to know is what you're still doing wasting time with this review? ;-) GO READ! MOVE IT! MOVE IT! MOVE IT! Jules picks up the incredible uber tale she began with NANO #1: EQUILIBRIUM NEWTON'S FIRST LAW immediately where that one left off - with Grace having to return home after news of her father's illness. It's an opportunity for Dana to meet the folks and for the two women to continue healing the ex-con's fragile psyche, but the pressures of family can get overwhelming - particular for someone whose past never seems far behind and whose fears are always lurking just beneath the surface. If these two haven't grabbed your heart yet - they'll have it solidly in hand throughout this sequel as they struggle to fit into one another's worlds, as they struggle against insecurities and at times even their better judgment to try to make a life together against all odds. Yet the present sometimes pales in comparison to the challenges of the past - and the darkness which always seems to reside there for one of them. This is a sequel which EASILY maintains the quality of its predecessor. Great characterizations, great story, great drama, GREAT writing. It gets my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!! Set a couple of months after NANO #2: EQUILIBRIUM MOMENT OF FORCE, this third story in the NANO SERIES finds a furious doctor Wilson refusing to accept any excuses from her now ex-partner Dana Papadopolis for her recent abandonment. Soon enough, however, her anger gives way to an acute despair when it becomes clear that the ex-con is not well - in fact, Dana is slowly becoming the victim of a killer she knows only too well but before surrendering to that darkness she needs to see the woman who gave her, if only for a little while, a glimpse into a life she's never deserved. This latest entry in the series is perhaps the most poignant as we see the extent of Dana's guilt for a past that once consumed a young girl and has never allowed her peace since. The hurt/comfort and futuristic qualities in this third story are particularly pronounced - presenting us with a premise that should make THE NANOVERSE a *very* popular web site in the weeks and months ahead. Another success in the making by one of the most welcomed additions to world of XWP fanfic this year. Jules' third entry in the series also gets my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!! Jules continues one of the best series EVER in XWP fanfic with the fourth entry in her NANO SERIES. Set a few months after NANO #3: THE CARNOT CYCLE, the story has Grace and Dana taking it easy at the young doctor's beach house while her partner recovers from her recent bout with the beta virus. It's a wonderful time for the two of them as they revel in a new intimacy made possible by Dana's emotional as well as physical healing...but it is also a happiness fated not to last for there are forces at work determined to take it from them - individuals that know just how deadly and valuable Dana Papadopolis is and will never be willing to give her the peace she craves. If you haven't yet discovered this OUTSTANDING series you are doing yourself a CRUEL disservice. Jules has created in Grace and "Doc" two of the most appealing representations of Xena and Gabrielle to date - placing them in an uber scenario that is cleverly constructed and utterly fascinating! Hold on to that ticker too because judging from the first part of NANO #4 this one is going to be a heart-stopper. Jules continues her exceptional NANO SERIES by continuing the story where NANO #4 GRAVITATION - NEWTON'S SECOND LAW left off. As their friend Rachel does a little quick house cleaning, Dana and Grace spend some quality time together, allowing the fierce connection between them to start healing the nanotech's body and soul. They know now, however, that neither will be safe again until they tie some loose ends from the past - loose ends that have Dana thinking about a dark part of her soul that although dormant most of the time these days remains very much a part of her. Relying on an economy of words to get their points across, Jules characters tend to reveal more in a few lines of dialogues than characters in other stories do in entire chapters. Her skillful use of dialogue create blunt, realistic exchanges that often add great charm to the characterizations while allowing her to keep a nice pace to the story even in the calmest of scenes. Jules has also done a great job updating the personalities of Xena and Gab so that Dana and Grace, although clearly following the uber archetypes, are also imbued with modern sensibilities. Simply put, this bard is a delight to read and this series continues to be among the creme-della-creme in uber fanfic. This new installment gets my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION! - 50 pgs., 12/14/98

Jules continues her fabulous NANO SERIES with Grace and Doc enjoying some quality time after their recent ordeal with the FBI. Doc knows just the way to release some of that pent-up stress too but ends up creating, much to her delight, one very determined and sexy little monster in the process. It's a playful, peaceful, loving time for the both of them but one unlikely to last in light of a pending family visit and the resurfacing of some unpleasant figures from the past... Grace and Doc are today easily among the most popular couples in uber fanfic with the reason for that very much in evidence in these opening chapters. Jules has given their relationship a spontaneity and wit and charm that is incredibly engaging and thoroughly addictive. The more you see of these two, the more time you want to spend with them. Starting of with some devilish humor, passionate romance and the inklings of serious conflicts to come, this one is well on its way to maintaining the quality of this exceptional series. Being a big fan of the vampire cop TV show "FOREVER KNIGHT", I just have to mention this new crossover story. For any fan of the two shows this is ABSOLUTELY WILD and tons of FUN!! ALL the characters seem to be in here, Xena, Gabby, Callisto, Joxer (well, no story is perfect after all <:), Hades, even Janice from XENA SCROLLS!! From "FOREVER KNIGHT" we get Nick, Nat, Tracey, and Lacroix so far. You aren't going to BELIEVE who is related to who - ingenious little genealogical meddling >:) The story is nicely written but unfinished so far. Think Xena in modern-day Toronto!! [unfinished]

Presented as a series of news reports - Bongo's latest chronicles the efforts of a group of scientists to clone a saber-tooth tiger from the prehistoric era - and then repeat the procedure using the bones of two Ancient Greek females discovered buried together in a recently unearthed tomb. The reports follow the events in the lives of these modern "science experiments" as they struggle to survive in a world they weren't meant for all the while seeking the same connections that once gave their lives meaning. The impartial, straightforward style of writing, gives this uber exercise moments of both humor and unexpected pathos. Clever and thought-provoking. - 5 pgs., 11/9/99

With the Civil Rights movement gaining strength, the Vietnam conflict raging on and American society split into warring camps, Carol Johnson and Erin O'Fallon are just two of the many Americans on opposite sides of a widening gulf of political and ethical differences - one a police officer working within the establishment to keep order - the other a young artist and peace activist determined to challenge the establishment at every opportunity. Their destinies bring them together at a peace rally turned violent where officer Johnson arrests the blonde flower child only to find herself drawn in by the girl's surprising intellect and gentle humor. Sensing a timeless connection with the disarmingly beautiful officer, Erin pursues a friendship which soon leads to a sharing of both hearts and minds as the two overcome the differences between their worlds to concentrate on the similarities drawing them together. Kindred spirits each fighting in her own way for the greater good, the two discover in one another an undeniable sense of home and the wisdom to recognize that no one side in the society they live in is completely blameless for the troubling times that would forever mark their lives. CN and Tonya have done a fantastic job here in capturing the mood of this period in American history and examining both the positives and negatives of the different social views. It's the start of a very special and very unusual friendship as Alexandra Carmichael, former member of the Confederate army and a killer sworn to vengeance against the men who once wronged her, learns to trust and laugh and love again in the company of a gentle soul determined to help her out of the darkness that has consumed her life for much too long. WolfDragon does a very nice job in developing both her leads and the relationship between them. The back story is told as a series of flashbacks which add considerably to the characterization of Alex Carmichael. The choice of setting also gives the story a nice touch of originality. - 181 pgs., 2/27/00
