SEARCH by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Rooks.shtm.htm">Rooks - [Alt]
This is the latest in a growing trend of very original, highly entertaining new uber-Xena stories we've been seeing lately. Rooks' latest is set in modern-day Canada where Engineering student Denise Alexander is busy working on her degree but not feeling very happy with the way her life is going. She dreams of traveling like her beloved Aunt Janice has done with her partner Mel - both now in their eighties. She wonders at the lonely existence she's been living and finds herself yearning for more. Then one day a mysterious young woman moves into her apartment building - a tall stranger with pale blue eyes who seems as lonely as she is. Despite the odds, the two will find themselves drawn to one another by a connection neither understands as the legacy of an ancient warrior and her bard once again works to bring soulmates together. This is very nicely written with some truly heartfelt kleenex moments and rather original uber renditions. DO NOT MISS!! [Note: Story is not explicit, see the sequel DISCOVERY] - 5/31/98

**SEARCH FOR AMPHIPOLIS (THE) by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Bat_Morda.shtm.htm">Bat Morda -- [Alt]
With her award-winning story IS THERE A DOCTOR ON THE DIG Bat made history, bringing us the first fan fiction tale to feature the characters of Mel Pappas and Janice Covington from the episode XENA SCROLLS. A fantastic combination of humor, drama, adventure and romance which also featured appearances by and flashbacks of our heroines' Greek ancestors, ITADOTD has managed to capture the hearts of readers as few other stories have done and in so doing has inspired many other Mel/Janice stories, contributing greatly to the growing mythology associated with these two characters. Appearing in only one episode of the series to date, the Mel and Janice many readers know are more a product of the fan fiction than the show, with Bat's now classic story being perhaps the most influential in the perception viewers have of these characters. Now, at last we have available one of the most eagerly anticipated sequels in XWP fan fiction - THE SEARCH FOR AMPHIPOLIS continues the story of the spunky archeologist and her Southern Belle of a partner as they once again embark on another wild quest, this one to recover the bones of their ancestors and hopefully put a warrior and her bard forever beyond the reach of the dark forces still threatening them. The story features an unprecedented cast of characters, including another famous archeologist from the 1940's, a group of very dedicated descendants of some of Xena and Gabrielle's closest friends, and even a few names from the Xenaverse readers may recognize ;-) The relationship between Mel and Janice in this story has deepened and grown making for a truly beautiful romance. In addition to their tale, Bat also writes about a difficult time in the lives of Xena and Gabrielle - a time that challenged their love and their friendship as it had never been challenged before. TSFA is a remarkably entertaining and well-written story, a worthy sequel to ITADOTD which further assures Mel and Janice's standing as premier players in the continuing legend of XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS. Note: the story at Dax's OBSESSION site includes perhaps the first ever publicly released picture of Batsky playing her guitar. This tale is NOT to be missed folks - it carries my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!! [See also the sequel UBERMADNESS] - 8/13/97

SOUTHERN COMFORT by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/CL_Bactad.shtm.htm">C.L. Bactad -- [Alt]

SOUTHERN COMFORT: YOU’VE NEVER BEEN NOWHERE by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/CL_Bactad.shtm.htm">C.L. Bactad -- [Alt]
A sequel to her Mel/Janice uber piece SOUTHERN COMFORT this new tale finds private eye Janice Covington trying to keep busy with work while distracted with the memory of a certain Southerner when as fate would have it - the Southerner returns...with company ;-) This story like the first one has the feel of some of those classic private eye films from the Bogie era. A fun read with good potential. [unfinished] - 5 pgs., 1/20/99

**SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Enginerd.shtm.htm">Enginerd - [Alt]
One of my favorite bards returns with the type of story that made her into one of my favorites :) Set in the 1940's, this TERRIFIC new offering has Mel Pappas convincing a certain archeologist to come home to South Carolina with her to meet the family. Uncertain but wanting to please the beautiful translator and touched by Mel's offer, a reluctant Janice agrees embarking on one of her biggest challenges to date as she tries to coexist with one very old, very proud, very suspicious and at times downright cruel Southern family. Like a fish out of water, Janice finds herself among people who have no idea what to make of her, sometimes don't care and just respect her spunk, sometimes do care and hate her for simply being. For one particular Pappas she's willing to endure it all clinging to a friendship unlike anything she's known before and suddenly encouraged by the possibility that those deeper feelings within her might be mirrored in Melinda's own heart. As the two embark on that emotional journey, however, outside forces will conspire to derail their happiness as some of those around them condemn what they cannot understand and others hide behind a veil of self-righteousness to rationalize an evil that may eventually destroy them both. Enginerd delivers here a masterfully crafted, thoroughly engaging story with two of the best characterizations of Mel and Janice I have ever come across in fanfic. Their humor, their friendship, their banter, their mutual respect and above all their love and integrity will have you anxiously anticipating that next step in their journey toward one another. Enginerd supplements the story with a colorful cast of supporting characters all very solidly developed in their own right. This is fanfic at its most entertaining folks. An EXCEPTIONAL MUST READ that gets my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION! - 156 pgs., 12/15/99

SPEAR OF PENTHESILEA (THE) by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Archaeobard.shtm.htm">Archaeobard -- [Alt]
Rousing adventure yarn that gives a slightly different spin to the Mel/Janice relationship as the two meet for the first time on a quest to find a legendary spear once wielded by a fierce Amazon Queen during her last battle with the Greek warrior known as Achilles. It's a quest that will tie the archeologist and her partner to that ancient past revealing the love that has tied their lines together for so long and awakening an enemy determined to stop them at any cost. Archaeobard crafts a fast paced plot here with solid characterizations, suspense and a nice treatment of the romance. DO NOT MISS! - 129 pgs., 5/26/99

STARS FELL DOWN (THE) by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Vivian_Darkbloom.shtm.htm">Vivian Darkbloom -- [Alt]
This tale begins as a Mel/Janice story set in 1953 with the archeologist now leading a small army of fierce...baseball players ;-) After a short, delightfully domestic interlude with Janice and the Carolinian Princess, however, the tale goes back in time to recount Xena and Gabrielle's fist time together - an event which the warrior does not seem to remember but the bard remembers all too well! Complete with lots of hilarious guilty thoughts, misunderstandings, lots of love and lust, this is entertaining and FUN! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! - 5/9/98

STAY NEAR, KEEP CLOSE by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Ms_Auggie.shtm.htm">Ms. Auggie -- [Alt]
Janice and Mel are off on a worldwind adventure when a vicious attack in Turkey forces them to go on the run. Separated and reunited once again, the two will eventually find themselves in the heart of Nazi Germany, struggling to survive even as they are discovering long burried feelings between them. Fast paced, full of action and drama this one is a nicely entertaining read. 235 pgs., 1/98

SWORD OF ARES by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/JayBird.shtm.htm">JayBird -- [Alt]
Set in the 1960's this is an action-packed story with some VERY amusing moments that has Xena and Gabrielle returning to inhabit the bodies of Mel and Janice in order to try to stop Ares' latest attempt at power. Despite being a little rounder around the edges and sporting some gray hair, the warrior and bard are determined to stop their old nemesis only they don't suspect the trump card Ares is waiting to play. A very original treatment of these two friends. - 11/29/97

**TERROR IN THE AMAZON by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Rachel2.shtm.htm">Rachel2 -- [Alt]
Rachel2's second Mel/Janice story after THE AEGIS continues the level of excellence this bard established long ago with her first forays into XWP fan fiction. WONDERFULLY original, suspenseful and emotional, this story takes the archeologist and her partner to the wilds of the Amazon where a fantastic discovery has been made. Unfortunately, one liiiiiitle problem keeps stalling things at the dig - workers are dying left and right and the natives fear a curse is at work. Amidst those challenges, stand the ones of the heart as Janice struggles against feelings she fears will only leave her broken-hearted and Mel finds herself embracing ones she's never had before. Rachel2 is known for her very careful characterizations and the thoughtful treatments she gives to the relationship between her characters. Her stories are consistently excellent reads and this one in particular is VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! [See also the sequel HOUSE ON REDMEN'S HILL] - 8/28/97

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Chrysippa.shtm.htm">Chrysippa -- [Alt]
An exciting adventure that has the granddaughters of Mel Pappas and Janice Covington digging in the ruins of an ancient city when they find a mysterious mirror which opens a window to the past, revealing what happened during the last days of that city. The ancient story begins with Xena and her bard responding to a distress call from an old friend of the Warrior Princess - a beautiful queen whose kingdom is on the verge of destruction both from natural forces and human greed. Undaunted, Xena and Gabrielle put into play a desperate plan to try to save the inhabitants and themselves before it's too late. All the while, the two are struggling with lingering insecurities and old wounds, loving each other and yet doubting they are worthy of that love. Well-written and origial, this is a fun read. - 3/4/98

**UBERMADNESS: THE BATTLE FOR THE THIRD AGE by a href="https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/Bat_Morda.shtm.htm">Bat Morda - [Alt]
The very talented Bat Morda returns with the long-awaited sequel to THE SEARCH FOR AMPHIPOLIS. Set one hundred years after that story, it chronicles the continuing struggle of Xena and Gabrielle's descendants against the God of War...only this time around those descendants may in fact be more than just descendants. The story begins with hacker extraordinaire Xero, deadly, beautiful and not keen on trusting people, narrowly escaping an assassination attempt. Soon she is joining forces with Rielle, a beautiful, green-eyed blonde who claims to know what is happening - but as a syscop, also happens to be a hackers worst enemy. All the while the skeptical Xero is learning more about a certain warrior of legend - and learning more about herself in the process. Bat does a wonderful job here of creating a futuristic world filled with personalities that should be familiar to many of you in the Xenaverse. Her Xero is a gritty, no-nonsense type very reminiscent of warlord Xena while Rielle embodies the best of Gabrielle - intelligent, determined, and very much ruled by her heart. This story is fun, passionate, emotional and decidedly original! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! - 151 pgs., 6/10/98
