SUNDAY FAN FICTION REPORT - 10/18/98
[Previous report was for 10/14/98]

Hi all,

Three new XWP fanfic sites now available - FREYIA'S XENA ZONE at: http://www2.prestel.co.uk/freyia/. Freyia's FAN FICITION CORNER is directly at http://www2.prestel.co.uk/freyia/fanfiction.html

JPuertoR's ARMAGEDDON INDUSTRIES will be featuring XWP and SEAQUEST fanfic. The main page is at: http://members.aol.com/jpuertor/homepage.htm. The XENA FICTION PAGE is at: http://members.aol.com/jpuertor/xenafiction.htm

Also, the ISLAND IN THE SEA OF TIME page is now featuring a XWP/ISLAND crossover fiction. I'm not familiar with this IITSOT series but it seems to be a commercial science fiction series. The main page is at: http://www.av.qnet.com/~fourls/island/island.htm. The FAN FICTION & ARTWORK page is at: http://www.av.qnet.com/~fourls/island/island.htm

THE XENAVERSE CODEX has changed names. The new index is called THE ATHENAEUM and is now located at http://xenafiction.net. Fanfic bard Britbard and Xenite Penthesilia have joined the staff there and will be contributing fanfic reviews.

I've added a new site to the HISTORICAL AND MYTHOLOGICAL RESOURCES section of the BARD'S REFERENCE LIBRARY. Called THE ENCYCLOPEDIA MYTHICA, it is a nicely organized online encyclopedia of mythology, folklore and legend featuring not only information on Greek mythology but on mythologies from all over the world. It also includes a search engine. Thanks to Joe Murphy for suggesting the site which is now listed at https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/reference.htm

Finally, a reminder to all you fellow fanfic fanatics out there that in addition to my own reviews there are now some other sources of reviews available. Barron includes a small, selective collection of reviews through his FAN FICTION REVIEWS page at: http://barron.simplenet.com/Content-Xena/FanFiction.html

Katrina makes available through her site the BARD PICKS, reviews contributed by YOU the fanfic readers. BARD PICKS is at: http://whoosh.org/katrina/reviews.html

Del_Kaidin also recently started offering reviews through the DEL'S FAN FICTION REVIEWS site at: http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Boulevard/2521/reviews/index.htm On Friday's Del hosts guest reviewers.

Note that both Katrina and Del are willing to publish through their sites reviews written by others so by ALL means people - when you read a story you just LOVE please consider writing a nice review of it and sending it to these sites. You will be contributing to this passion of ours in two ways - you'll be informing others of a good story they should read AND you'll be rewarding the bard who spent the time and effort to keep you entertained for a little while. Barron, Katrina, Del and I DO NOT review every story out there so particularly in those cases when we haven't reviewed a story you enjoyed please tell the fandom what you liked about it - get the word out!

GENERAL FICTION:

CHRONICLES OF THE WARRIOR PRINCESS - BOOK I: HUNTERS AND THE HUNTED by JPuertoR
Just in time for Halloween we get an entertaining XWP/ALIENS/PREDATOR crossover thriller by a new bard which has Xena and Gabrielle discovering a cache of these strange looking eggs in the forest. Soon after they happen upon the creatures responsible for that little cache just as these are...getting to know the locals. Meanwhile, another deadly visitor is making his presence known, playing a game which the warrior and bard know they must join before humans become an endangered species. This is a suitably gory, suspenseful action-adventure which fans of the sci-fi horror genre should particularly enjoy. [unfinished] - 10 pgs.

ALTERNATIVE FICTION:

THE STRANGER IN YOUR EYES by Sword'n'Quill

OKTOBERFEST by Redhawk
Part five is now available. This sequel to Redhawk's fantastic HIGHLANDER/XWP crossover tale, ONLY ONE begins on a plane bound for Europe on the first leg of a vacation Xena hopes will further aid in the recuperation of her young lover Rickie Gardner. Still suffering from horrific nightmares, Rickie is nevertheless flourishing in the warrior's company - starting to remember a life from very long ago and looking forward to a second chance with her soulmate. Unbeknownst to them, however, others are watching and waiting...knowing the life of an immortal will not be peaceful for long. In this latest section Xena and Rickie spend time with an old friend unaware that a very dangerous predator is stalking them. Picking up where ONLY ONE left off, this story features a riveting, suspenseful plot and a strengthening of the Xena/Rickie connection. Definitely one for the MUST READ list. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! [unfinished] - 17 pgs.

HOLY WAR by ProudWarrioress
Chapter 17 - AWAKENING - is now available. ProudWarrioress' tale is a novel which inspired by THE PRICE goes way beyond the episode in terms of scope, creating a story of such magnitude and such impact that it can only be described as a saga of epic proportions - a blockbuster of XWP fan fiction. Set after the events in THE PRICE, this novel begins ominously with the thoughts of a warrior as he prepares to go to war - not an ordinary warrior but a leader among men - a warrior getting ready to unleash the greatest terror Greece has ever known as he leads his army on a holy crusade to recover the Chosen One promised long ago to his people - a prophesy Telmark, Supreme Commander of the Horde, is determined to see fulfilled at any cost. It is this new and deadly threat which Xena and Gabrielle find themselves facing when they join the massive army of several allied Greek City states preparing to do battle with the Horde. At the head of the army is Marmax, the commander from the episode IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE who thanks to Xena and the bard found peace for his own people but now must fight a battle for the very survival of Greece. Despite their mounting fears, Xena and Gabrielle agree to help the allied force and soon find themselves in a familiar situation - heavily outnumbered, facing savage Horde warriors - with little hope of survival. For Xena the solution is to start awakening the darkness within herself and to try to make sure Gabrielle is safe but what the Warrior Princess never suspects is that once again she is spending too much time trying to fight the Horde without considering what their motivations could be - what they want...or whom? In this latest chapter two soulmates are reunited...but not for long. The story has the feel of great film epics like SPARTACUS or the more contemporary BRAVEHEART. ProudWarrioress' depiction of the Xena/Gab relationship, as in her other stories, is one of deep friendship, loyalty, sacrifice and unquestionable commitment. She uses a shifting point-of-view technique that gives us a very thorough insight into the minds of both our heroines and their enemy. This story is an experience you will not soon forget. A MUST READ for every Xenite, it carries my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!! - [unfinished] - 4 pgs.

TROPICAL STORM by Melissa Good
Part six is now being posted. Time for uber-Xena fans to rejoice as the incredibly talented Missy Good extends her gift of storytelling into the contemporary uber realm. Missy's latest is a departure from everything she's done before - a story set in modern-day Miami, centering on the lives of two strangers whose destinies bring them together amidst the turmoil of a hostile corporate takeover. Wealthy, brilliant and deadly, Dar Roberts has cultivated a well-earned reputation as one of the most efficient corporate raiders in the Information Technologies business. To her bosses she is a formidable weapon to be used in the never-ending struggle for power, control and profit. To the people employed by the companies she assimilates - the executive is a predator - cold and merciless. It is a reputation she is living up to as she prepares to decimate the work force of a recent acquisition. In charge of that work force is Kerry Stuart - a smart, young manager whose life had been going well until the recent turn of events. With dogged determination, Kerry has escaped the pressures of family to make her own way in the world - establishing a career and rising quickly within a small company - only to now have to face the prospect of those efforts being for naught as a disconcertingly beautiful blue-eyed shark strolls into her office. In this latest section, Dar and Kerry spend a little time with the Mouse ;-) Missy's many strengths are quickly in evidence throughout the first parts of this story - rich descriptions that engage your every sense - multi-layered characterizations that draw you into the psyche of the characters and a story very much grounded in human emotions, human frailties and strengths along with the raw vulnerabilities that ultimately make us all seek the comfort of another soul. Working in the the Information Technologies industry herself and a fellow Miamian, Missy also imbues the story with a very realistic feel. This one will keep us glued to those monitors in the coming weeks folks. It gets my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION! - [unfinished] - 25 pgs.
