WEDNESDAY FAN FICTION REPORT - 10/8/97

Hi guys,

Well, I'm back from Valley Forge. This was my first convention and it was an experience I VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND to all Xenites out there. Meeting the celebrities was GREAT! Meeting fellow fans was EXTRAORDINARY - and meeting the bards had me in HEAVEN!! There were SO many bards there TOO!!! Nothing beats spending time with others who share the obsession.

THE PUZZLE by Tim Boothby
Intriguing story by a promising new bard that has Xena and Gabrielle meeting a strange old man with an uncanny talent for the healing arts. Despite his gift, the man is a tortured soul who shares something in common with the Warrior Princess - an overwhelming guilt for the darkness in his past and a certainty that redemption will always remain beyond his grasp. Nice treatment of the Xena/Gab relationship.

THE RIVER by Aslan
The conclusion of this story is now available. This is an action-packed sequel to Aslan's FORGIVENESS which has Xena and Gabrielle joining forces with the warrior's former enemy Arianna - this time to track down a mutual foe - the warlord Talinares. What they don't suspect is that Talinares has formed an alliance of his own with an evil determined to bring the Warrior Princess to her knees. In this concluding part a friendship is tested and blood is shed.

THE SWEETEST DREAMS by L. Graham
An absolutely DELIGHTFUL story featuring a truly beautiful, tenderly poignant interpretation of the relationship between warrior and bard. Fulfilling an old promise, Xena surprises her best friend with a trip to Thessaloniki to attend the reknown play festival held there every autumn. For the young bard it's a dream come true but for the warrior a nightmare in the making as she anticipates loosing the most precious thing in her life. Graham skillfully captures the sweetness, the fun and the frustration of the Xena/Gab exchanges. Her characterizations of both women is on the money in a story that will leave a warm spot in your heart. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

TIME TO KILL by Sarah Mangene
This is the *PERFECT* story to read during Halloween month! Prepare for chills galore as Xena and the Gabster arrive at a mysterious abandoned castle where they have been summoned to a meeting with Hercules and Iolus. With the two men still not expected for a few days, the warrior and bard decide to wait in the castle never suspecting the evil they are about to uncover. Well-written and CREEPY! Make sure to read this with most of the lights turned off, preferably on some rainy night when you're ALL by your lonesome! BWAHAHAHAHHA!!! >:)

THE ENCHANTMENT by Friction
A fantastic debut for a new bard, this story begins with Xena and Gabrielle visiting the Amazons where Ephiny soon finds herself in the role of matchmaker - trying to get the warrior and the young Amazon queen to admit what seems very obvious to everyone else. Her efforts, however, are soon thwarted by a vengeful god obsessed with the Warrior Princess and more determined than ever to keep her from discovering the love a gentle bard holds for her. This is well-written, with some very tender moments, lots of emotion, a little angst and a ton of passion! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

GET YOUR KICKS...ON ROUTE 66 by Miss and Aisa
Part three of this story is now available. This is an alternate timeline XWP story based in the present day. Meet Zina, a tall raven-haired beauty on a Harley who is at the right place and the right time to save a young strawberry blonde when she's attacked on a lonely Arizona road. On her way to L.A., a grateful Bree finds herself fascinated with the leather-clad biker but soon realizes she may not get a chance to learn more about the stranger. Clever and promising tale.

THERE'S PROFIT IN HISTORY by Psyche
This is a crossover story involving the characters of XWP and a short- lived show called PROFIT. Although I never watched PROFIT myself, I didn't have problems following this story and I found a lot of it quite funny. The tale basically has the characters of Gabrielle and Gail changing places so Gail ends up in Ancient Greece while the bard experiences the modern world. It should particularly appeal to fans of both shows but give it a try regardless. Note: the story does include some subtext but nothing explicit.

THE WARRIOR'S JOURNAL by WordWarior
This gifted bard is back with a short, thought-provoking and very nicely written tale of Xena just prior to her army's betrayal and the gauntlet she was forced to endure. The story is told by a scribe who follows her around, recording her actions on the night before a battle as she visits her men, comforting the sick, encouraging the warriors and exacting punishment on any who dare disobey her orders. The portrait that emerges is of a Warrior Princess with a very definite if sometimes ruthless code of honor and of a woman engulfed in darkness but beginning to reach out for the light that will find her in the months and years to come. Original look at a Xena in transition. Note: This story is not explicit. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

For those of you reading this post who are not familiar with the term alternative (alt.), it refers to ADULT stories that add a romantic element to the relationship between Xena and Gabby, depicting them as more than just friends.
