WEDNESDAY FAN FICTION REPORT - 1/20/99
[Previous report was for 1/18/99]
Hi all,
This is the last fanfic report I'll be writing before leaving for the Santa Monica convention tomorrow morning so be aware that there will be no more reports until late Monday or more probably Tuesday of next week. I want to meet lots of Xenites guys so DO make sure to say hi if you go. I'll be wearing a name badge (AS I HOPE EVERYONE ELSE DOES! - HINT! HINT! ;-) On Saturday I'll be seating in section C, row 9, seat 9. On Sunday I'll be in section C row 10, seat 4. I'm 5'8", 34, about 150 lbs, neck-length brown hair, brown eyes and I'll be wearing a big green fanny pack :)
I'm including a SPECIAL SECTION below called SANTA MONICA - BARD ROLL CALL listing those bards who've informed me that they will be attending the con.
Also, I have a number of e-mail requests pending from individuals who have asked to be included in the BETA READERS DIRECTORY. Sorry about the delay in that guys - last week and this one have been rather hectic. I'll make that a priority soon as I return so expect to hear from me early next week and THANKS for volunteering.
One new Xena fanfic site today - Lace Priest's XENA'S CAVERN OF ALTERNATIVE TALES located at: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Labyrinth/6338/stories.html
Shadowfen is looking for Xenites to help in writing story blurbs and warnings for stories indexed at her site. No HTML experience is required. If you can help e-mail Shadowfen at shadowfen@shadowfen.simplenet.com. SHADOWFEN'S XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS FAN FICTION INDEX is located at: http://shadowfen.simplenet.com/ffindex/
GENERAL FICTION:
A STORM ALONG THE STEPPES by Bel-wah
A snapshot of the life of the Warrior Princess in her most ruthless days, Bel-Wah's latest has Xena and Borias occupying a conquered village for a few days as Xena plays a very different type of Solomon and Borias shows his heart to a woman not ready to see love as anything but a weakness. Well in keeping with the TV characterizations, this story evokes both contempt and pity for the Xena that was. - 6 pgs.

ALTERNATIVE FICTION:
REVELATIONS by T. Novan
This latest entry in the RAISING MELOSA SERIES, chronicles a particularly poignant moment in the lives of Xena and Gabrielle as the warrior prepares to give up a role she's cherished for so long and the Amazon Queen learns the extent of the sacrifice her partner has made. Another solid addition to the series with a very satisfying treatment of the Xena/Gab partnership. DO NOT MISS! [part of a continuing series] - 8 pgs.

SOUTHERN COMFORT: YOU’VE NEVER BEEN NOWHERE by C.L. Bactad
A sequel to her Mel/Janice uber piece SOUTHERN COMFORT this new tale finds private eye Janice Covington trying to keep busy with work while distracted with the memory of a certain Southerner when as fate would have it - the Southerner returns...with company ;-) This story like the first one has the feel of some of those classic private eye films from the Bogie era. A fun read with good potential. - 5 pgs.

NANO #6: THE FIRST LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS by Jules Mills
The sixth installment in Jules already classic NANO SERIES finds Grace and her nano tech back home and busy at work while they continue building a life together. It's a life already full of both domestic and professional challenges as Doc seeks the help of a professional in trying to understand the darkness within her and both struggle to fulfill the promise of the technology they're working on. Jules has achieved an easiness in her depiction of these characters and the relationship they share that continues to make her stories a rare treat. Exceedingly well-written, this new story promises the same mixture of humor, passionate romance and heartwarming emotions that have put Jules Mills among the creme-della-creme of XWP fanfic talents writing today. NANO #6 gets my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION! [unfinished] - 4 pgs.

NANO #5: MOTION by Jules Mills
The conclusion is now available. Jules continues her exceptional NANO SERIES by picking up the story where NANO #4 GRAVITATION - NEWTON'S SECOND LAW left off. As their friend Rachel does a little quick house cleaning, Dana and Grace spend some quality time together, allowing the fierce connection between them to start healing the nanotech's body and soul. They know now, however, that neither will be safe again until they tie some loose ends from the past - loose ends that have Dana thinking about a dark part of her soul that although dormant most of the time these days remains very much a part of her. In this latest update Grace sees a part of her lover she's never seen before and a commitment is reaffirmed. Relying on an economy of words to get their points across, Jules characters tend to reveal more in a few lines of dialog than characters in other stories do in entire chapters. Her skillful use of dialog create blunt, realistic exchanges that often add great charm to the characterizations while allowing her to keep a nice pace to the story even in the calmest of scenes. Jules has also done a great job updating the personalities of Xena and Gab so that Dana and Grace, although clearly following the uber archetypes, are also imbued with modern sensibilities. Simply put, this bard is a delight to read and this series continues to be among the creme-della-creme in uber fanfic. This new installment gets my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION! - 11 pgs.

SANTA MONICA - BARD ROLL CALL:
The following is a list of those bards who've confirmed that they will be attending the Santa Monica con. I've included seating information when this was provided. If you are determined to meet a bard and don't have a seat number one thing you might do is leave a message for the bard on the message board Creation will have available. Make sure to include your seat number or some indication of where you can be reached so if the bard sees the message they can get to you. DO keep in mind guys that bards are going there to have fun with friends and may already have a busy weekend planned so they may not be able to get back to you.
This is a nice opportunity to thank bards in person for the terrific fiction they've shared with us folks so think back on all those stories you've enjoyed - not only the really popular novels but some of those poems and shorter works that sometimes touch the heart just as deeply or make us laugh just as hard - and consider thanking the writer responsible if both of you will be at the con. Without further adieu - here's the SM line-up - AND WHAT A LINE-UP IT IS!!

For those of you reading this post who are not familiar with the term alternative (alt.), it refers to ADULT stories that add a romantic element to the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle, depicting them as more than just friends.
Happy reading!
