SATURDAY FAN FICTION REPORT - 12/6/97

Hi guys,

MaryD has added a new interview to THE BARD'S SCROLL page - this one with Danae, author of several excellent stories including PUZZLE PIECES and BUILDING A MYSTERY. THE BARD'S SCROLL page is at: https://ausxip.com/bards/index.html

Another new site now featuring XWP fan fiction is KEVIN'S FANFIC page at http://www.ionline.net/~loughlin/fanfic/

Before I go on to the stories tonight I have an important issue I want to address. Sadly, AS IT HAS HAPPENED IN THE PAST, once again it seems that the staff of the XENA NETFORUM have purged ALL MESSAGES dated prior to June 1997. The NetForum as many of you know is a discussion forum where lots of fan fiction is posted. Some of our best bards got their start writing stories on the NetForum. THIS DEVELOPMENT MEANS ANY STORY THAT WAS POSTED PRIOR TO JUNE 1997 IS GONE!!! Xenos has been maintaining links to those stories through the XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS INDEX at http://www.xenafiction.com/ but if you check the links to NetForum titles on there now over 40 of the stories are NO LONGER AVAILABLE.

For anyone who enjoys fan fiction and for the Xenaverse as a whole THIS IS A TERRIBLE LOSS FOLKS!! These are stories which reflect what fans where thinking at the time they were posted - THEY ARE A PART OF XENAVERSE HISTORY! Moreover, these are stories new Xenites now will NEVER get to enjoy. Among the bards who had stories purged are BlackCentaur, BlackFox, Celticblue, Democratus, 8thHouse, Fathom, FrenchBri, JeanBean, John E, HelpVishnu, Hobbes, Iapetus, Katlyn, KevinL, Ligeria, lost soul, MikkiH, Nicandrea, Nutball, Onora, Pagan, Passion, Procrastinator, PtahOpener, Tony, Troi, Wishes, Xcellent, and Youngwarrior.

I would like to appeal to these bards on behalf of all of us readers and those future readers who may now never get a chance to read your stories to PLEASE, PLEASE CONSIDER POSTING THE STORIES THAT WERE PURGED AT ONE OF THE PERMANENT FAN FICTION WEB SITES. At the end of this report is a listing of the stories that were purged and are no longer available anywhere on the Net. If any of the bards no longer have copies of their own stories please contact me. I have copies of some of these.

Now TO ALL THE NETFORUM BARDS OUT THERE - PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE MAKE IT A POINT TO SEND YOUR STORIES TO ONE OF THE PERMANENT WEB SITES AS SOON AS YOU'RE FINISHED WITH THEM! Do not assume they will always remain available through the NetForum because THEY WILL NOT. Some of you I know will stop writing for a number of different reasons - you may loose access to a PC, you may loose interest in the series or you may stop writing for a number of other reasons. When this happens bards are seldom motivated to archive their stories SO PLEASE DO SO AS SOON AS THEY'RE FINISHED. Make your stories a gift to the Xenaverse that will be on the Net for a long time to come.

BREAKING THE ICE by Mary Morgan
Very unusual, skillfully written story set in a northern settlement where villagers are slowly starving to death while they're stalked by a mysterious assailant. Into this drama enter two strangers - a tall, dark warrior and her smaller blonde companion. For most of the worried settlers they are of passing interest, but for one of these they become an obsession - a promise of strength in one case and a focus for hatred in the other. This is a story about freedom lost, freedom regained and the healing power of hope. It features characterizations that build on one another resulting in well-defined characters and a very solid plot. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

STRANDED by Visitor (as Lost Soul)
This little vignette was first released on the NetForum back in Jan. 1997. It is an emotional slice-of-life piece which chronicles the thoughts going through Gabrielle's mind as she and Xena are stranded on a small boat in the middle of the ocean with little water and even less food.

THE SLAVE TRADE by Visitor (as Lost Soul)
Released on the NetForum in Jan. 1997, this vignette has Xena freeing some slaves and then reluctantly having to reveal a truth about her past to Gabrielle.

ANCIENT VOYAGE by Kevin Loughlin
A XWP/STAR TREK-VOYAGER crossover that has Janeway and the crew of Voyager following a strange vessel thru a subspace rift that lands them back in Ancient Greece where they will soon have a fateful encounter with a certain Warrior Princess and her bard companion :) This is a particularly fun read for fans of both TV series.

For those of you reading this post who are not familiar with the term alternative (alt.), it refers to ADULT stories that add a romantic element to the relationship between Xena and Gabby, depicting them as more than just friends.
