THURSDAY FAN FICTION REPORT - 3/26/98

Hi all,

Tonight we have some excellent new stories including the first uber efforts by a couple of established talents.

GENERAL FICTION:

CAUSE AND EFFECT by S. Singer
This story provides yet another glimpse into Xena's past as it has her reuniting with a couple of old acquaintances, including the mysterious figure known as The Master who came into her life after the death of M'Lila and tried unsuccessfully to quiet the rage within the warrior. Good characterization of a more in-control Xena now reflecting on the errors of her past and the people she disappointed. [See the sequel reviewed below]

THE CHALICE OF BLOOD by S. Singer
A sequel to Singer's CAUSE AND EFFECT (reviewed above), this new tale has Xena trying to teach Gabrielle about the meditation techniques she learned from her old teacher, The Master, when another old friend comes to request their help in finding the fabled Chalice of Blood capable of giving whosoever drinks from it unimaginable power. Nice depiction of the Xena/Gab relationship in a still-unfinished, promising story.

IT'S AN ILL WIND OR CAUGHT IN A DRAFT by L. Fox
This piece is sort of like Xena meets GI JANE...or rather Gabrielle does when she's mistaken for a G-A-B-R-I-E-L and drafted into the Poteidaian army ;-) Some very funny moments in this including a psychological test that will have you grinning from ear to ear. [Note: the story contains subtext]

ALTERNATIVE FICTION:

THE PARTY by Bat Morda
The Flying Mammal returns and she returns IN STYLE with a story that will knock your socks off...as well as anything else you might be wearing while trying to read this distinctly stimulating new offering ;-) Once again featuring Bat's favorite uber-duo, the tale has Janice and Mel arriving separately at a costume party which soon turns into en erotic challenge for the two as they struggle through the evening trying to resist the temptation of one another. This is foreplay at its most masterful in a sexy, romantic piece grounded in love. Having set the standard for the depictions of Janice and Mel in alt. fiction, Bat continues to add depth and charm to these two popular descendants of the Warrior Princess and bard. A highly entertaining, skillfully written addition to fanfic that is a MUST READ! VERY HIGLY RECOMMENDED!

CHICAGO 5AM by L.N. James
Teenagers are disappearing from the streets of Chicago, casualties of a dark subculture based on drugs, sex and rock and roll. Assigned to investigate is Mariel Potidean, a brilliant young FBI agent who soon finds herself teamed with a rather irritating partner - an ex-cop by the name of Tina Amphipoli with a dangerous reputation, a mysterious past and electric blue eyes. With four chapters currently available, L.N.'s newest delivers an engaging premise with two very strong characters and lots of potential for suspense, drama and romance. DO NOT MISS!

DISTURBING REVELATIONS by Enginerd
Enginerd's first foray into the uber-Xena genre is an amusing little tale that has Mel and Janice wondering how they're going to explain certain revelations from Gabrielle's scrolls to the scientific community...only the archeologist and her partner are not quite thinking about the same thing ;-) Very cute! [Note: This story is not explicit].

BEST FRIENDS, BETTER ENEMIES by Katrina Pint
A very intense, dark story that has Xena and the bard on their way to answer a summons when Gabrielle discovers an ancient sword lying on an empty field. Their lives will never be the same again as the friend Xena loves is replaced by one of the greatest evils the world has ever known - an evil determined to recapture ultimate power...and willing to destroy the Warrior Princess in order to do it. Still unfinished, this story is poignant in its depiction of a Xena determined to try to save her bard even after experiencing first-hand the horror Gabrielle becomes capable of. [Note: the story contains references to sexual violence]

For those of you reading this post who are not familiar with the term alternative (alt.), it refers to ADULT stories that add a romantic element to the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle, depicting them as more than just friends.
