SUNDAY FAN FICTION REPORT - 3/29/98

Hi guys,

Three stories written by Hobbes that were recently lost when the SCI-FI CENTRAL FANFIC ARCHIVES site closed have now made it to the Web. I'm reposting the reviews for those below. A BIG thank you to Hobbes for making them available again :)

THE MAIDEN AND THE SEVEN WARLORDS: A XENAVERSE FAERY TALE by Nene Adams
The fifth entry in Nene's XENAVERSE FAERY TALES series has a certain little bard from Poteidaia going up again seven evil warlords to rescue her Warrior Princess and save her from... applesauce ;-) A charming blend of a familiar story with the world of XWP. [Note: story contains very mild subtext.]

EARTH MOTHER by B.S. Barber
Xena and Gabrielle help the Erda, goddess of the Earth, fight an evil Wizard trying to steal her powers. This story reads very much like a XWP episode.

DARKNESS AND LIGHT by Xenamaster
Fascinating story that puts a slightly different spin on the events in the episode BITTER SUITE. In Xenamaster's story the Olympian gods have been dethroned and are being hunted by Dahak's minions - their powers failing them in the world of darkness created after Xena succeeds in throwing her best friend off a cliff. The Warrior Princess which emerges from that is once again the warlord of old - a woman who fully committed to evil now embraces both Dahak and the one-time enemy whose depravity matches her own. With little hope left, Ares and Artemis, last of the Olympians, decide on a desperate plan to try to reach Xena - a plan centered entirely on a mortal they're not even certain is still alive. There is an epic quality to the storytelling in this tale that makes it a very enjoyable read. Nice depictions of Ares and Artemis. Good tie-ins with the TV series as well. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

THE INNOCENCE OF WAR by Arianwen P.F. Everett
Parts 2-4 of this intriguing new tale is now available and developing VERY nicely. The story has Ares trying to convince the Fates to help him fight Dahok when an unexpected event changes the lives of a certain Warrior Princess and bard along with his own. In these new parts Xena and Gabrielle awake in a very different world and soon find themselves caring for and abandoned baby...god ;-)

FROM THE DARKNESS CAME by Raistlyn
The conclusion of this story is now available. This is a Very eerie tale that finds Xena and Gabrielle trying to help two kingdoms sign a peace treaty after years of war between them only someone seems intent on stopping that treaty and is willing to murder to do so. In these final sections, the two friends get some "spiritual" help in looking for the murderer.

THE ISLAND by Hobbes
Hobbes first Xena fan fiction piece, this was originally posted on the NetForum back in March 1997 initiating a series of serial stories from this bard that quickly made her a favorite with Nutballs. It is a sweet tale of friendship that has the Gabster continuing to chip away at the walls the Warrior Princess puts up when the two find themselves stuck on a desert island. THE NEXT DAY by Hobbes
Coming on the heels of THE ISLAND (reviewed above), this story is really a series of little vignettes depicting the exchanges between Xena and Gab as they travel the countryside. It has the same feel as the episode A DAY IN THE LIFE. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Tired of Xena teasing her, Gabrielle decides to get back at her friend with a little play-acting, never suspecting the painful memories this would stir up in the warrior. Another nice piece by Hobbes that celebrates the very special friendship between these two women. DO NOT MISS!

YOU CAN'T JUDGE A SCROLL BY ITS CASE by Rooks
An absolutely OUTSTANDING new story from this very talented bard that you will not be able to put down! On their way to assist a village recovering from a vicious raid, Xena and Gabrielle unknowingly anger a god who takes his revenge by switching their bodies. It is a little development that could not have come at a worse time as they soon learn the Amazons have need of their queen. Deciding to pursue one another's obligations, the bard in Xena's body goes to help the villagers while the warrior now much shorter and less intimidating than usual, goes to the Amazons. Meanwhile, a series of events is unfolding that will bring other players into the picture as a sacred artifact is stolen, young hearts stir restlessly, and a couple of VERY inept bad guys device a plan to capture a certain Warrior Princess. This is a true comedy of errors that has everything - humor, adventure, suspense, romance and a number of chapter breaks that can only be described as hysterical! In addition to the main story, Rooks also includes a couple of subplots that will keep you just as captivated. The characterizations are solid, colorful and well-rounded in a long tale guaranteed to keep you entertained. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

A MOMENT OF TRUTH by Curiositee
This bard's first Xena fanfic effort, set after the episode FORGIVEN, is a well-written, thoughtful piece that has Xena and the Gabster reflecting on their lives and the hidden emotions both are very much aware of as they weather a storm in a small cave. Good characterizations. [See the sequel A MOMENT OF FAITH].

A MOMENT OF FAITH by Curiositee
A sequel to Curiositee's A MOMENT OF TRUTH, set after the episode WHEN IN ROME, which does an exemplary job of merging the story Curiositee is telling with what has been transpiring in the TV series. On their way back from Rome, Gabrielle attends to an injured Xena as they grow increasingly aware of the change their relationship is undergoing. A different perspective on things, sensitively presented. DO NOT MISS!

For those of you reading this post who are not familiar with the term alternative (alt.), it refers to ADULT stories that add a romantic element to the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle, depicting them as more than just friends.
