FRIDAY FAN FICTION REPORT - 4/3/98

Hi folks,

First of all - some announcements regarding the LUNACY FAN FICTION REVIEWS site. The various review files were getting much too big which was causing them to load very slowly into those browsers so I've broken up all the files into smaller, gentler versions :) These should load into your browsers a bit quicker.

I've also made some technical changes which will make the pages look and behave better in text browsers like LYNX. Most notably, the crosslinks between pages on my site should now work in LYNX :)

For you Web masters out there who link to my pages - BIG changes. I've changed ALL the anchors within the files that allow you to link directly to individual reviews. I do have a list of these anchors which I've been sending out to those of you who I remember link to the site. The list has all the new URLs you should use for individual reviews - you can just cut and paste these into your own pages. If I haven't yet sent you this list of new anchor URLs and you want the file reply to this message or just e-mail me at: lunacy@dc.seflin.org The file is about 100k.

The main URL and those for the articles and list of definitions remain the same.

As for tonight's fanfic scene - two new stories and lots of updating being done :)

One of the funniest series in Xena fanfic keeps getting...FUNNIER! The Great Turkey Liberator and her bard return to Amphipolis were they discover that their heroic efforts on behalf of a few feathered friends have led to some...unforeseen developments ;-) Adding to Xena's "fierce" reputation, this entire series is a MUST READ folks! Silk masterfully taps into that side of the Warrior Princess that perhaps more than any other makes her a true hero. XENA AND GABRIELLE MEET BARNEY by Inky
You parents out there should just LOVE this new little skit which FINALLY reveals the true nature of a well-known purple dinosaur and has our heroines trying to save the day! ;-) Personally, I've had my suspicions about Barney ALL ALONG! [Note: some mild subtextual references in this]

GODDESS OF BATTLE by Shadowhawke
Chapter 7 of this story is now available. This promising tale begins on a stormy night with the birth of a child whose destiny is linked to the gods. Many years later, immortal eyes watch as enemies prepare to clash with the warrior that child turned into. In this latest chapter Xena enlists the aid of a couple of old friends.

ALTERNATIVE FICTION:

BEST FRIENDS, BETTER ENEMIES by Katrina Pint
Chapters 22-23 of this tale are now available. This is a very intense, dark story that has Xena and the bard on their way to answer a summons when Gabrielle discovers an ancient sword lying on an empty field. Their lives will never be the same again as the friend Xena loves is replaced by one of the greatest evils the world has ever known - an evil determined to recapture ultimate power...and willing to destroy the Warrior Princess in order to do it. In these latest chapters, with the help of an old adversary, Xena puts in motion a plan to get back her best friend. still unfinished, this story is poignant in its depiction of a Xena determined to try to save her bard even after experiencing first-hand the horror Gabrielle becomes capable of. [Note: the story contains references to sexual violence]

DARK PROMISE by Katrina
Chapter three of this story is now available. This latest entry in Katrina's BLOOD AND ROSES SERIES already promises to be one wild, fun ride. A crossover tale featuring the characters from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, this story has Buffy getting quite a surprise when she meets Willow's aunts who aside from having the same names as a couple of popular TV characters, also keep setting off the slayer's hypersensitive senses. In this latest chapter the "girls" all learn more about one another. Katrina's characterizations are on the money and will delight fans of both series although this is entertaining even if you only watch one of them. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY by Paul Seely and Jennifer Garza
Part eight of this story is now available. This is the highly anticipated sequel to one of the best uber-Xena stories available on the Net, SURFACING which already looks like it's going to rival Paul and Jennifer's first story as one wildly exiting ride! Featuring one VERY deadly encounter between a trained killer and the men assigned to protect its quarry, the opening sequence is a gripping combination of suspense, action, intrigue and pathos - set in sharp contrast to the scenes which follow as we see Diana and Charlie enjoying domestic life. The months of tranquillity, however, have not affected the ex-agent's razor-sharp senses which soon enough are warning her that the peace she's been enjoying may just be coming to an end. In this latest part, Diana comes face to face with her past. As in SURFACING, Paul and Jennifer do here an outstanding job of imbuing their writing with a very contemporary "feel". The relationship between Diana and Charlie is characterized by an easiness between them - a level of comfort that reveals their love even in the smallest of gestures. Excellent writing and excellent storytelling. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

For those of you reading this post who are not familiar with the term alternative (alt.), it refers to ADULT stories that add a romantic element to the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle, depicting them as more than just friends.
