SATURDAY FAN FICTION REPORT - 8/2/97
[Previous report was for 7/30/97]

Hey guys,

There's a new XWP Web site now available - this one dedicated to the adventures of Mel Pappas and Janice Covington and appropriately called MAD DOG'S FAN FICTION. It is located at:
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Delphi/7045/madfic.html

Tonight we have the final chapters of two of the best new stories this year! Both are alt. fic.

ALTERNATIVE FICTION:

THE PELOPONNESIAN WAR - BOOK I: PRECURSORS by Baermer
The conclusion of this first Book in the PELOPONNESIAN WAR saga is now available. It continues the tale begun in Baermer's excellent THE ELEUSINIAN MYSTERIES (review at https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/alt.htm) Set in an epic period of Ancient Greek history amidst the drama of the Peloponnesian War, this first book sets the stage for the bloody conflict to come and traces the steps of Xena and Gabrielle as the two become enbroiled in the political struggles in Athens, find themselves at odds with a deadly and very determined goddess, and must as always - rely on one another to survive. In this final installment, the warrior and bard are forced to choose sides as things begin to deteriorate. Baermer's storytelling easily draws the reader in with a well-structured plot that is compelling, original, and appropriately tinged with the air of and danger that one would expect from a story about the beginnings of war. Despite the historic events unfolding in this tale, the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle remains the heart of the story making it into one of the very tender romances Baermer is known for. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! First reviewed 7/16/97.

THE AEGIS by Rachel2
The conclusion of this story is now available. Rachel2 has been among my favorite bards since she began writing - showing incredible originality in her stories and the ability to weave tales that truly captivate. In the THE AEGIS she displays these skills quite handedly, bringing us a new and wonderfully clever treatment of the Mel and Janice characters and of their relationship in a story that also features Xena and Gabrielle, tons of action, humor, suspense, a touching romance and the beginnings of an undying friendship. The story revolves around the legend of The Aegis - Zeus' great shield, strong enough to stop even a thunderbolt from the King of the Gods himself and as such coveted by those seeking power...and revenge. In Ancient Greece, Xena and Gabrielle become reluctant pawns in a deadly game between immortals for the right to wield the shield. It is a game that will bring them face to face with an old enemy while forcing them also to confront unresolved issues still between them. Eons later, in a time beset by a terrible war and ripe with danger, Mel and Janice will continue the struggle their ancestors began as they search for the mythical shield and also have to confront unresolved issues between them. Exceedingly well-written, this tale offers a really unique approach to the combined portrayals of Mel/Janice and Xena/Gabrielle. This is a tale that holds a lesson for us all and which I VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! (First reviewed 7/29/97)

For those of you reading this post who are not familiar with the term alternative (alt.), it refers to ADULT stories that add a romantic element to the relationship between Xena and Gabby, depicting them as more than just friends.

Happy reading!
