CHILDHOOD'S END by Anon
Part 10 of this classic XWP story is now available. When Anon first released this tale on the NetForum in early 1996 it became an instant favorite with the fans but for a long time it was impossible to get the story because the NetForum staff disabled access to older postings. With its return to the Web, Xenites will hopefully be able to enjoy this tale now for years to come. This story is the cutest of the cutest! Xena as a five year old - need I say more? It is a beautiful tale of friendship, sacrifice, innocence lost and innocence regained. Anon has been re-editing the story and is not completely finished yet so only part of it is now available. CHILDHOOD'S END was the first piece of fan fiction I ever read so it holds a special place in my heart. It got me hooked on the NetForum and on fan fic. I WHOLEHEARTEDLY RECOMMEND IT! A MUST READ! Famous for his parodies, Cathbad now brings us his first-ever story - reuniting Xena and Iolus in an action-packed adventure that has the two being summoned by an old teacher of Iolus to fight a deadly evil. Along the way the two deal with some unresolved issues between them and rediscover a very special friendship. Nicely written and sweet.

The second chapter of this story is now available. This mysterious tale begins with a Roman soldier on watch at a fortress in the land of the barbarians as he is thinking back on the number of soldiers killed recently - some right as they slept...In this latest chapter, the soldier's worst fear becomes reality.

IT'S A KIND OF MAGIC by Beaugrnt
A very clever XWP/HIGHLANDER crossover tale that has the warrior, Gabrielle and some of the other characters from XWP living in an Ancient Greece where the immortals from HIGHLANDER are a reality. In these first two chapters, the immortal Xena of Amphipolis, former Warrior Princess, comes upon a young girl desperately fighting the raiders who have already decimated her village. Recognizing what the young woman, named Gabrielle, is and why the raiders want her, the warrior becomes determined to save her from a fate she knows all too well. Beaugrnt does a nice job of integrating the characters of XWP with the elements of the two series. This should be a fun read for fans of both XWP and HIGHLANDER.

ALTERNATIVE FICTION:

TARTARUS by M. Parnell
After the masterpiece that is ORIGINS (reviewed 8/18/97) I didn't think M. Parnell could possibly top that effort anytime soon. Well, with the release of the first eight chapters of TARTARUS, this bard may be well on her way to doing just that. Starting where ORIGINS left off, this new story has Xena and Gabrielle getting reacquainted with life on the road after the emotionally draining months they've just experienced. Enjoying a new depth to their relationship, they are nevertheless allowed little time to explore this before once again they find themselves in the middle of a tragedy - trying to help the survivors of an earthquake - in a village located not far from where Xena once let her army loose. The Warrior Princess helps knowing that she will likely be brought to justice for those crimes, knowing too what the punishment is likely to be, but never suspecting that a gentle heart will be caught in that quest for justice, determined to share her fate...no matter what that may be. As with Parnell's other stories, this is writing at its best and storytelling at its most captivating. Parnell's stories feature one of the most intelligent characterizations of the Warrior Princess in fan fiction. It is fascinating to see how Xena's mind works under the pen of this bard. ORIGINS took the Xena/Gabrielle relationship to a new level which this story has now begun to explore more fully. It is a subtle exploration which nevertheless depicts great love and great passion. We have a heck of a story to look forward to in the coming months folks. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE by Nene Adams
The adventures of Lady Evangeline "Lina" St. Claire and Rhiannon Moore continue in this FANTASTIC sequel to Nene's first uber-Xena story XENA BY GASLIGHT (reviewed 7/30/97). This time the intrepid private investigator and her secretary are faced with a mystery strangely connected to Lina's own past - a mystery involving the disappearance of two people, the gruesome murder of an old friend, the growing strength of a secretive cult and clues horrid enough to scare even the bravest of hearts. Extremely well-written, this story reflects Nene's impressive historical and literary knowledge with an incredible attention to detail. In Lina and Rhiannon she has created characters which although based on the warrior and her bard, are in themselves unique and fascinating. Still unfinished, this story promises to be something different and thoroughly entertaining. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

SURFACING by Paul Seely and Jennifer Garza
Chapter 4 of this story is now available. A very well-written, original new uber-Xena tale that will have you spell-bound from chapter one. Set in the present day, it revolves around the mysterious activities of a secret agent going by the name of Diana Starret. On assignment from the shadowy, top-secret organization who once recruited her when she had little choice in the matter, Diana's mission is to keep a dangerous criminal from landing in prison until the full extent of his operation has been revealed. It is this assignment that leads her to a fateful meeting with a young lawyer named Charlotte Browning. The two women are inexplicably drawn to one another and soon find themselves haunted by the same dream - about a leather-clad warrior drowning in blood and the strawberry blonde trying to save her. In this latest chapter, Diana puts into action a plan that may change her life forever. As yet unfinished, this intriguing new offering is NOT TO BE MISSED!!

WARLORD DAZE by Katrina
Chapter 16 of this story are now available and guys, this is developing into an outstanding piece! It is a somewhat different warlord/slave story that will likely get that pulse racing...fast ;-) With Xena in warlord mode once again, a determined Gabrielle enlists the aid of friends to help her get back to the warrior's side the only way it is possible for her to do so - as Xena's personal slave. It is a decision that could bring them closer than ever before but which will also bring challenges and risks neither may be quite ready for. In this latest chapter the fierce warlord becomes...playful >:) The tale is a psychological exploration not only of the characters of Xena and Gabrielle but also of their relationship and of the nature of power itself. Note: this story contains light S&M. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

BRIDGES II by S. Derkins
The conclusion of this story is now available. Starting where BRIDGES (reviewed 6/13/97) left off - this sequel maintains the sweet quality of the original as Xena and Gabrielle start a new life for themselves - a life in which they are suddenly much more comfortable expressing their feelings...or so the bard thinks until things begin to go wrong.

For those of you reading this post who are not familiar with the term alternative (alt.), it refers to ADULT stories that add a romantic element to the relationship between Xena and Gabby, depicting them as more than just friends.
