SATURDAY FAN FICTION REPORT - 11/21/98
[Previous report was for 11/19/98]

Hi fellow fanfic fanatics :)

Thought I'd get this in before next week since I know lots of you will be going away to visit with family and friends. With Thanksgiving fast approaching I think this is the PERFECT time to stop and reflect on this wonderful online community our interest in the TV series Xena: Warrior Princess brought us to. For the TV series and the characters on there we have the folks at Renaissance Pictures to thank of course - BUT for the Xenaverse - this online gathering of fans who share so much with one another - for that we have OURSELVES to thank. Those of us who enjoy fanfic in particular owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the many webmasters and bards and now also artists who constantly feed this wonderful addiction of ours. So guys, I would like to ask each of you this weekend to think about those Web sites you visit often, think about those stories or those art pieces you've enjoyed and take just a few minutes to send a couple of messages expressing your thanks to the Xenites responsible. In particular, make sure to thank any new bards whose works have touched you and which you feel show promise because they will most likely have gotten far fewer such notes than the more popular, established bards. The Xenite webmasters pay for the sites they make available to us for FREE and they often spend hours upon hours maintaining these. The bards and artists similarly spend hours on their stories and art pieces and then have the courage and generosity to share that creative vision with us - again for FREE so people - lets repay them this Thanksgiving by letting them know how much we appreciate them. The key phrase this coming week - "Have You Thanked A Bard/Webmaster/Artist Today?" ;-) Write those thank you notes!

THE WAY OF THE FAMILY by TZ
TZ's sixth entry in THE WAY OF LIFE SERIES finds the warrior and bard visiting Amphipolis with their kids and an Amazon entourage. It is a time for Xena to reacquaint herself with the feeling of being part of a family again but the happiness is short-lived as the warrior soon senses the winds of war blowing near. TZ does a nice job here of capturing that sense of family and friendship adding poignancy to the developing unrest. - 24 pgs.

STRIKEN by Barry Marshall
Part two is now available. On their way to Thessaly the warrior and bard learn that a deadly plague is raging through Greece...and that an old friend of the Warrior Princess may be the one spreading it. In this latest part the search for Xena's friend continues as the warrior and bard see the horrors that the plague has already brought. Barry's latest is a well-written hurt/comfort tale with solid potential. [unfinished] - 9 pgs.

THE BROKEN BLADE: A TALE OF CAMELOT by Llachlan
Part two is now available. Llachlan contributes a very promising new entry in the INFINITY SERIES as the immortal Xena tells her beloved Rickie about a time of knights and kings and chivalry and intrigue. With the teenager listening spellbound, the ancient warrior remembers the day centuries before when she found the bastard son of a medieval warlord and set out to turn that babe into the king legends had long ago foretold. In this latest part Xena remembers putting her plan into action while Rickie does the bard thing. Llachlan immediately captures here the sense of mystery usually associated with the origins of King Arthur. Moreover, careful attention is also paid to developing the Xena/Rickie relationship, imbuing it with a deep sense of love and tender passion. With a nice flashback to Xena and Rickie's first Solstice together - this is particularly timely story that will immediately grab your attention. One to look forward to in the weeks ahead. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! [unfinished] - 7 pgs.

GAMES WITHIN GAMES by Chakram-1
Part seven is now available. A new name in XWP fanfic makes an impressive debut on the Web with a terrific new tale of adventure, intrigue and romance. As the story begins, Xena and the Gabster are on their way to a bard competition, when they learn of an impending attack by raiders. Hoping to warn the local king, the two take a detour to the capital - only to walk into a web of intrigue that will wrap around them both endangering their lives and the happiness they've so recently found. In this latest part a surprise attack separates warrior and bard. Chakram-1 has a delightful writing style with an almost medieval feel that contributes to the story's atmosphere. The treatment of the Xena/Gab relationship is intensely satisfying, depicting two partners that love and treasure one another deeply. Already a great read, this one shows fantastic promise. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! [unfinished] - 2 pgs.

OF DRAG KINGS AND A WARRIOR PRINCESS by Susan Smith
Chapter 16 is now available. This talented writer tries her hand at uber fiction this time around, producing a very different, very original contemporary story. Rosalind Olchawski considers herself a fairly ordinary college professor leading a fairly ordinary life - a life so ordinary and so bland, in fact, that recently Rosalind has started to wonder whether she's even capable of feeling that passion others seem to feel. It is a concern that is answered one evening when she accompanies a friend to a club and discovers in the startling blue eyes of a drag king the destiny she had been waiting for. In this latest chapter Rosalind learns about a connection spanning the ages and a destiny that cannot be denied. Very well written, with characterizations that are sensitively done, a twist of the uber theme and an intriguing storyline this one should keep you hitting that page down button. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! [unfinished] - 7 pgs.

A WARLORD'S VENGEANCE by Marion D Tuttle
Part 3 is now available. Xena and the Amazons suspect all may not be right when a warlord demands the presence of the true Amazon Queen before he'll sign a peace treaty. In this third part the warrior and bard travel to Amphipolis where amidst the happiness of seeing Cyrene they learn some disturbing news. Good tie-in with a first season episode along with some nicely emotional moments. - 11 pgs.

For those of you reading this post who are not familiar with the term alternative (alt.), it refers to ADULT stories that add a romantic element to the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle, depicting them as more than just friends.

Happy reading!
