SUNDAY FAN FICTION REPORT - 3/15/98
[Previous report was for 3/10/98]
Hi folks,
I've added a couple of files to the Lunacy site - a compiled file of Uber-Xena reviews and another one featuring reviews of Warlord/Slave stories. Also, I made changes to the files that should make them more user-friendly for those of you using text browsers like LYNX. If you're using graphical browsers the pages will likely look the same. The Lunacy site is on MaryD's XENA INFORMATION PAGE at: https://lunacyreviews.ausxip.com/index.html
GENERAL FICTION:
THE HAND OF HADES by Becklee
Action-packed story that has the warrior and bard traveling toward a mountain where a deadly evil awaits - an evil that needs but one thing to attain ultimate power...a human soul. Clever story, well-written with some heart-stopping moments.

SWEET SURRENDER by Blue
A story which brings Gabrielle full circle as faced with the horrors of the events we saw in MATERNAL INSTINCTS she remembers the prophetic dreams she had just before meeting a certain Warrior Princess. Poignant and beautifully written.

THE LAST STORY by Leapr
Moving story set in the last years of the bard's life that has her reminiscing about her life with Xena. Kleenex alert on this one!

TRANSITIONS by MacavityCat and XeniteOne
Intriguing story set after the episode A NECESSARY EVIL which has Gabrielle troubled by horrifying nightmares - nightmares which seem strangely familiar to Xena... The authors are doing a nice job of building the mystery in this emotional tale.

IT'S A KIND OF MAGIC by Beaugrnt
Parts 6-7 of this story are now available. This is a very clever XWP/HIGHLANDER crossover tale that has the warrior, Gabrielle and some of the other characters from XWP living in an Ancient Greece where the immortals from HIGHLANDER are a reality. In these first two chapters, the immortal Xena of Amphipolis, former Warrior Princess, comes upon a young girl desperately fighting the raiders who have already decimated her village. Recognizing what the young woman, named Gabrielle, is and why the raiders want her, the warrior becomes determined to save her from a fate she knows all too well. In this latest section, Gabrielle learns more about being immortal. Beaugrnt does a nice job of integrating the characters of XWP with the elements of the two series. This should be a fun read for
fans of both XWP and HIGHLANDER.

ALTERNATIVE FICTION:
THE NIGHT WILL MORE THAN PAY by Brit Bard
Nicely written new story set after the events in the episode BITTER SUITE which has a troubled Gabrielle still haunted by recent traumas - anguished by the knowledge that once hopeful dreams now seem so painfully impossible. Romantic and ultimately reaffirming.

LIGHT MIST FALLING by Jill
With this follow-up to her earlier works CAVES and THE SEA AND THE SPRING LEAVES, Jill continues to bring us some of the most imaginative and original fan fiction being written in the Xenaverse today. This new tale begins with Xena and the bard receiving a summons from an old friend of the Warrior Princess. It is while on their way to see him that they start to notice the deplorable condition villagers in the area seem to be in - conditions which make them desperate and VERY, very dangerous... Jill delivers an eerie storyline here that has all the right ingredients - suspense, mystery, cliffhanger action and a Xena/Gab relationship that is reminiscent of the playful, loving partnership we saw in the first two seasons. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

REFLECTIONS FROM THE PAST by Melissa Good
The conclusion of this story is now available. Already responsible for six of the most popular, most loved XWP stories on the Net, Missy latest is a combination uber-Xena/clip show story which already looks like it will easily match the outstanding body of work bearing this writer's name. As the story begins Xena and her bard are still hibernating in Amphipolis, enjoying the peace of their home and the simple comfort of just being with one another. They decide to work on translating the ancient scrolls they found while visiting Jessan's people in BOUND. Before long they are uncovering an emotional tale, almost as passionate and poignant as their own, involving a village girl named Ardwyn and the enigmatic Viking warrior who captures her heart. All the while the story revealed in those scrolls is awakening memories in Xena and Gabrielle, memories of the times they've shared and the long road they've traveled to get to the happiness they're now blessed with. In this latest part, Ardwyn and Elevown emerge from their nightmare into a wonderful new reality even as Xena and Gabrielle prepare to leave the peace they've found at home. Missy's flashbacks continue to be among the best in the business, giving us insights into scenes from the TV show and filling in the time in between episodes like no other fan fiction has ever done. The uber sections in this story are also particularly well written - done in a style that is different from the rest of the novel and adds tremendously to the atmosphere of the more ancient story. In a rather angst-filled third season, this newest Missy offering is a godsend folks! What are you still doing reading this review?? GO READ THE STORY!!! It gets my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION! [See also the prequel THE LONGEST NIGHT] [*NOTE*: The story features violence - including sexual violence so please make sure to read the author's warnings in the disclaimer at the beginning and before certain chapters]

PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY by Paul Seely and Jennifer Garza
Part seven of this story is now available. This is the highly anticipated sequel to one of the best uber-Xena stories available on the Net, SURFACING which already looks like it's going to rival Paul and Jennifer's first story as one wildly exiting ride! Featuring one VERY deadly encounter between a trained killer and the men assigned to protect its quarry, the opening sequence is a gripping combination of suspense, action, intrigue and pathos - set in sharp contrast to the scenes which follow as we see Diana and Charlie enjoying domestic life. The months of tranquillity, however, have not affected the ex-agent's razor-sharp senses which soon enough are warning her that the peace she's been enjoying may just be coming to an end. In this latest part, Charlie remembers a painful part of her past even as Diana comes face to face with her own. As in SURFACING, Paul and Jennifer do here an outstanding job of imbuing their writing with a very contemporary "feel". The relationship between Diana and Charlie is characterized by an easiness between them - a level of comfort that reveals their love even in the smallest of gestures. Excellent writing and excellent storytelling. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

For those of you reading this post who are not familiar with the term alternative (alt.), it refers to ADULT stories that add a romantic element to the relationship between Xena and Gabby, depicting them as more than just friends.
Happy reading!
