THE BIGGEST STEP by TZ
Set after the episode FINS, FEMMES AND GEMMES, this is a wicked little exercise in seduction that has the Warrior Princess deciding to take that final step in her relationship with Gabrielle - and discovering a whole new side to the innocent bard. **BINDS THAT TIE (THE) by Bat Morda
Coming from the keyboard of Bat Morda it should be no surprise that this is one of the BEST Warlord/Slave stories written to date in XWP fan fiction and an absolute MUST READ! To help a monarch who once offered her army shelter, Xena agrees to try to intimidate a neighboring kingdom into abandoning any expansionist plans they may have. In order to do so, however, she must first convince the king there that she is still the feared warlord of old - an image which really doesn't allow for a bard as a companion. For Xena the solution seems simple - to go alone. For Gabrielle another solution is MUCH more rational - to go along as Xena's slave. Guess who wins ;-) Exceptionally well-written and edited, this is a romance that explores the attraction to things dark and dangerous. Words that come to mind - hot, sizzling, burning! DO NOT READ AT WORK (unless your co-workers are used to seeing you flushed and wearing a silly grin). Bat offers a few more warnings herself at the beginning of her story - make SURE to read those. **BINDS THAT TIE II: THE TACKY SEQUEL (THE) by Bat Morda
In an unusual treat we get BOTH the original story and its sequel with this latest by the Xenaverse's favorite flying mammal :) Bat tried a very unique approach in this sequel - basically giving us the same story as the original but from a different perspective - this time as seen through Xena's eyes. The technique works really well enhancing the characterizations set forth in the first tale and revealing to an even greater degree the love beneath the passion. The same words come to mind as in the first story by the way - HOT, SIZZLING, BURNING - so this one gets the DO NOT READ AT WORK warning as well as a reminder to read Bat's disclaimers (they're too funny to miss anyway). VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! - 56 pgs., 9/97

BIRTHRIGHT by Jim Kuntz
Set about six weeks after KEOLA'S STORY, this new novel from one of our veteran talents immediately plunges Xena, Gabrielle, their friends and family into a desperate new crisis when Sula, the warrior and bard's adopted daughter, is kidnapped and Lila is critically injured in the process. While the enraged Lion of Amphipolis and the Queen of the Amazons track the kidnappers, Keola must look after the safety of those left behind in Poteidaia, aware now that Sula's kidnappers had helped from a very dangerous enemy. For all involved the coming weeks will test them as never before, plunging the Warrior Princess into a dark place she hoped never again to visit, leaving the bard to fear for both the safety of her daughter and the emotional health of her partner, and sending Keola on a difficult quest to uncover the danger lurking closer to home. Fast-paced and intense, Jim's writing moves the story along quickly while once again bringing these characters to life. He uses extended flashbacks to add some lighter moments to the tale, revisiting the happier days surrounding Xena and Gab's joining ceremony. The author describes this story as "wildly imaginative" and she's not kidding! Based on the events which took place in the episode GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN, this tale begins with Ares confronting Gabrielle over Xena's recent preoccupation with her. He is certain Xena's secret obsession with Gabrielle is hurting her skills as a warrior and could possibly get her killed so he simply wants the bard to give in to her own passions for the warrior. Ares knows the real reason Gabrielle fights against those passions - he knows the secret the bard has been hiding since the fateful meeting with Bacchus - a secret which shames her but which ironically may help her understand Xena better. For Xena's sake the two come to an understanding, never suspecting that the warrior will be taking control of the situation soon enough. Definitely unusual but well-written and original. DO NOT MISS! [Note: This is the first story in the BLOOD AND ROSES SERIES] - 10 pgs., 7/11/97
