THURSDAY FAN FICTION REPORT - 10/16/97
[Previous report was for 10/15/97]

Hi guys,

A quick personal note here before we go on to the report (which features some WONDERFUL fiction tonight by the way :) - I've been getting some messages recently thanking me for doing the reports. I try to answer anything I see in my e-mail or at the NetForum but because I subscribe to several Xena and non-Xena mailing lists and the NetForum tends to be so erratic these days, I'm sure I sometimes miss messages. To all of you who've written me I just want to say that the kind words ARE appreciated and that I have a LOT of fun putting these reports together :) I also want to remind everyone to make sure to also thank your favorite bards since without them we wouldn't have all these terrific stories...and I'd be otta of a job!! ;-)

Now lets talk about some happening fan fiction!!

GENERAL FICTION:

TELEPATHY by Steve Mulligan
A few wise words from a certain bard calm Xena's troubled soul. This vignette is set after the events in the episode THE FURIES.

OLYMPIAD by Kaiser
Chapters 10-12 of this promising new story are now available. The tale has Xena and the Gabster agreeing to protect an arrogant star athlete headed for the Olympic competitions who's supposedly being stalked by assassins. This is well-written, combines a little bit of subtext with a bit of maintext and has some VERY funny moments. It reads quite a bit like a TV episode.

ALTERNATIVE FICTION:

WINTER'S ENDING by Melissa Good
With this bard in our folds, Xenites have to simply be the LUCKIEST fans on the Net. Yes folks...she's baaaaaaack - and as usual she's back with another EXCEPTIONAL novel. When I have to review a new work by Missy I take out my thesaurus because inevitably I find myself in need of synonyms for the word "fantastic"...soooooo, thesaurus in hand - here we go! :) As with all her novels to date, this new work is a sequel to what has gone before so if you haven't read Missy's previous novels treat yourself to the experience. In order they are A WARRIOR BY ANY OTHER NAME, AT A DISTANCE, HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS and BOUND. Set after the events in BOUND, the beginning of this novel chronicles a quiet time in the lives of the Warrior Princess and her bard. Having faced adversity, struggled with old wounds from the past and deadly enemies in their present, having finally surrendered to the love which binds their minds, their hearts and souls as one, Xena and Gabrielle have settled in Amphipolis for the Winter. With a home of their own at long last, family surrounding them and a joining to look forward to, their happiness seems assured. The Winter is hard, however, and long and before it's over warrior and bard will once again face new challenges - the first one of which arrives with a friend in trouble and young lives on the line. Missy's depiction of the Xena/Gabrielle relationship remains second to none. In this story she continues the technique she started using in BOUND, offering flashbacks of past events in the lives of Xena and Gabrielle. These are often as emotional and captivating as the greater story, adding depth to the already outstanding characterizations. There is a warm, poignant beauty to Missy's writing that just dazzles the soul. I have no doubt that even people who have never seen XWP would be hooked if they read a Missy story. Sit back and enjoy folks because we have some wonderful weeks ahead of us as this story unfolds. As with everything to date that has come from the Good keyboard - it is NOT TO BE MISSED and gets my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION! Note: This story is not explicit.

ANOTHER BEGINNING by S. Derkins
A different presentation of the events in the episode BEEN THERE, DONE THAT that has Xena once again trying to solve the mystery of the repeating day but struggling also to talk with Gabrielle about the new feelings they've both been experiencing.

THE TRIAL by de Bonheur
A poignant story that has Xena attending the trial of an old friend and struggling with the sense of helplessness she feels at her inability to help.

FOR BETTER OR WORSE by Enginerd
The conclusion of this story is now available. Enginerd was one the early pioneers in XWP fan fiction who helped establish the level of excellence we enjoy in the genre today. She has contributed some of the most original and well-written tales ever written about the warrior and bard - with this latest offering perhaps being her best to date. Coming on the heels of the amazing GIFT OF GAB, this sequel had a lot to live up to...and it DOES so handedly! Once again, Enginerd delivers a story which raises the caliber of her writing just that extra notch reaffirming her place among the top storytellers on the Net. Having finally admitted their love for one another, Xena and Gabrielle are still adjusting to the dynamics of their new relationship when they are called back to Walsas to help with the marriage of the bard's older sister and a very nervous Meleager the Mighty. On top of wedding plans, Gabrielle soon finds herself faced with a mother who has never forgiven her for leaving home years before, and struggling with self-doubts inspired by the knowledge that a certain Warrior Princess will never see her as an equal. As if that weren't enough, news soon arrive from Amazonia of a crisis brewing there - a crisis which could cost the young Amazon queen her very life... This is a terrific action-adventure, a romance which will melt your heart, a poignant hurt/comfort tale, and a HILARIOUS comedy all wraped-up in an exquisitely written package you will NOT soon forget. One of Enginerd's strengths has always been her characterizations -particularly her depiction of Gabrielle which once again stands out in this story. Enginerd's Gabrielle is intelligent, brave, determined, vulnerable and just absolutely endearing. This is one of the BEST stories I have ever read and a MUST for every Xenite. It receives my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!! Note: This is the latest of five stories by Enginerd all of which follow what has occurred in the preceeding tale. For the best reading experience it is recommended that you read the stories in this order: JUSTICE IN WALSAS [general fiction], IN A MAN'S WORLD [general fiction with subtext], ON UNCERTAIN GROUND [alt. fiction], GIFT OF GAB [alt. fiction] and FOR BETTER OR WORSE [alt. fiction]. http://www.geocities.com/Area51/5038/bow1.html

For those of you reading this post who are not familiar with the term alternative (alt.), it refers to ADULT stories that add a romantic element to the relationship between Xena and Gabby, depicting them as more than just friends.

Happy reading!
